释义 | The Dopamine Clinic: Art Studio The Dopamine Clinic is a Washington D.C. based alternative visual art studio and think tank founded in 2012 by Delé Akerejah (born August 4,1984)a Nigerian-American artist and former denizen of the homeless community of downtown Washington,D.C. Akerejah first achieved renown for his collage graphic novel “L’Escroc” under his brand “the Dopamine Clinic” in the autumn of 2012, of which the then art director of Street Sense Media Eric Falquero took notice and encouraged him to develop a body of work while the news outlet published his semi-autobiographical crime/espionage series after the first feature story on his life and work at the Dopamine Clinic was written by staff writer Jeff Gray. It was titled “Weaving Tales Out Of Shadows” [https://www.streetsensemedia.org/article/weaving-tales-out-of-shadows/ www.streetsensemedia.org/article/weaving-tales-out-of-shadows/] The Dopamine Clinic was not always an innovative art studio, it had seedy origins. Akerejah strove to focus it on a creative path, but his time on the mean streets had taken their toll on his mental health. Upon being diagnosed with a mental illness and learning to cope through art during his hospitalization period, Akerejah had a Franciscan epiphany that turned him into a full time creative. He was released and provided with the home of which he had longed for so many years. On August 15th, 2012 the Dopamine Clinic opened its doors in a one bedroom apartment, and from there Akerejah began building up an arsenal of paints, magazines, glue as well as other tools and supplies to share the Dopamine Clinics’ art with the world. Other artists from the margins soon gravitated towards “the Clinic”, and it shortly thereafter became a local underground phenomenon through its supper club themed “shindigs” and free art workshops. The works from the Dopamine Clinic became increasingly sophisticated as the artist developed into a painter,writer,mixed-media artist, entrepreneur and event host. Inevitably Akerejah unveiled the website www.dopamineclinic.comto the world in order to cement the studios’ online presence. Additionally, from 2013 through 2015 a blitz of films about Akerejah and the Dopamine Clinic were released via YouTube, most notably the intimate house produced “Enter The Dopamine Clinic” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R1OFmLcb9-8 . The Dopamine Clinic’s slogan is “Madness Is A Privilege!”; A theme that highlights its mental health advocacy through art. The studio also posits the notion that creativity and access to it should be democratic and prices its work reproductions accordingly. The studios’ origins in poverty are evident in the consistent use of salvage items and discarded materials in the works of Akerejah, its principal artist. The Dopamine Clinic has exhibited works at local art galleries such as the George Washington University 201 Gallery (2013), the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery[https://www.joanhisaokagallery.org/available-vessels1/ www.joanhisaokagallery.org/available-vessels1/] (2016), Art Enables [https://art-enables.org/2nd-sat-workshop-mixed-media-madness/ art-enables.org/2nd-sat-workshop-mixed-media-madness/](2018), and the D.C. Arts and Humanities Commission (2018) while also participating in pop-up shows such as “Artomatic” [https://www.streetsensemedia.org/article/former-vendor-turned-artist-welcomed-by-artomatic-community/ www.streetsensemedia.org/article/former-vendor-turned-artist-welcomed-by-artomatic-community/](2015) and “RAW:Underground Artists” www.rawartists.org/dopamineclinic(2013, 2014, and 2016). Akerejah has even been in correspondence with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser for the portraits of her that he sent for the City’s collection in 2014 and 2018 respectively. Multiple articles on the Dopamine Clinic by Street Sense Media keep the studio fresh in the public consciousness at the grassroots level. Most recently the artist and studio were profiled in the November 2018 Newsletter of the Hillcrest Family and Children’s Center in Washington,D.C. In this publication Akerejah reaffirmed the Dopamine Clinics’ dedication to mental health advocacy and issues affecting the homeless through its art. |
