The Ernest Simons Manufacturing Company was a producer of shirts, sheets, pillow cases, and related products during the first half of the twentieth century based in Port Chester, New York. Incorporated in 1902, it was the successor to the smaller firms West & Simons, Pond, West & Simons, and N.C. Pond & Company. Founded by Ernest Walker Simons, the Ernest Simons Manufacturing Company was officially incorporated in June of 1902. [1]

Historical Background:

Trained as a mechanical engineer, Simons first became involved in the manufacture of various tools and hardware at Riversville, Connecticut. In 1876, Simons joined the firm N.C. Pond & Company in a former shovel factory, making shirts on a small scale. In 1879 a partnership was formed under the name Pond, West & Simons, consisting of N.C. Pond, Marshall O. West, and Simons. [2] In addition to the manufacture of shirts, they also sold and repaired sewing machines. [3] They built a two story frame building as their factory, soon adding a third story. After N.C. Pond left the business in 1892, the firm was renamed West & Simons, until the death of West in January of 1902, when it became known as the Ernest Simons Manufacturing Company. During the latter period, a large brick factory was constructed consisting of three buildings with a floor space of 152,000 square feet, employing 800 people. [4] The firm manufactured shirts, sheets, pillow cases, and related items for various American brands such as Fruit of the Loom, Anchor, Whitehorn, and others. During World War I, they were also contracted to produce military clothing. It was one of the largest firms of its type in the country during its operation. [5] Many of Simons' brothers and relatives were among the board of directors during his leadership. Simons was known to possess a keen business accumen. He enjoyed his daily interaction with his workers, taking great care in their welfare, giving aid when they were in need. On at least two occasions, sharing annual profits with everyone one of his employees. Apart from the shirt factory, Simons was also involved as a Director with the Port Chester First National Bank.[6] During the company's first year of operation, it was award the largest single contract ever at the time for their industry, when they manufactured 70,000 sheets in four days for the Pullman Sleeping Car Company. [7] In 1905. the rapid growth of the company caused a housing shortage for those employed there, forcing the company to open a second factory in nearby Norwalk, Connecticut as the Norwalk Shirt Company under the leadership of brother Joseph W. Simons, employing one hundred girls and women. [8] [9] The second factory was eventually sold to the firm of Cluett, Peabody & Company in 1909. [10]

The Role of the firm during the Port Chester fire of 1908:

On June 22nd, 1908 a massive fire wreaked havoc on the heart of the Port Chester business discrict. Over twenty businesses were destroyed, and as many as 40 families were left homeless. Aid was brought from many neighboring towns to help fight the blaze. Damage was estimated to be around $300,000.00. The first started in the Burns Building Block, impacting 10 structures. It was suspected the first started in the hay loft occupied by the Borden Condensed Milk Company.[11] It was first detected by one of the girls working in the Simons shirt factory. She shouted from a window, a warning to men below on the street. The officers of the Simons Company sounded their alarm in the factory, evacuating 600 to 700 employees who were in the 3 Simons factory buildings. Certain male employees remained in the factory buildings in order to operate emergency equipment. The factory equipment was more capable than that of the fire departments. Employees and firefighters working from the factory roof were scorched due to nearby flames from a building opposite. [12] Nearly every nearby structure was lost. Ernest Simons was appointed as treasurer of the relief effort for the city. [13] The following year, the Simons factory improved their ability to fight potential future fires by installing a large pump capable of producing 1,000 gallons per minute, and weighing 5 tons. [14] Soon after, a new sprinkler system was installed as well. [15]

Employee relations:

The business took great care to see that its employees were well compensated. in 1909 and 1910, each employee, "from the head of the office staff, down to the little errand girls," was awarded with five percent of their salary as a bonus, along with a note of appreciation, "In recognition in this manner the faithful services of our employes, who have been in the employ of the company during the year 1910, the company hopes that it will encourage a close co-operation between the company and its employer, ERNEST SIMONS MFG. CO." [16] The favor was returned to the employers in the form of gifts of a framed proclamation and a leather-bound volume. The proclamation stated "Whereas, We, the employes of the Ernest Simons Manufacturing Company, were more than agreeably surprised on the first day of March, 1910, by the unexpected generosity, the unusual manifestaton of appreciation of the said Corporation, which without promise or previous intimation, made us sharers in the profits of the Corporation of the preceding year; and, "Whereas, This unusal manifestation of the progressive spirit of our employers has come to most of us as a special gift of appreciation and recognition, a spirit largely that of the great Nazarene; "Therefore be it "Resolved, That we, collectively and individually, return our most appreciative thanks to the President, Mr. Ernest Simons; the Board of Directors, and and each and every member of the Corporation, for the kindness displayed in the liberal manner in which our services have been recognized and rewarded. "Resolved, That in acknowledgment of the marked evidence of confidence and appreciation shown to us, the wholly unexpected share of the Corporation's reward, we, each and every one, pledge ourselves to further every branch of the business in which we are concerned, even without expectation of further extra reward, believing that the spirit displayed toward us on the date before stated is sufficient to inspire us to any and every good work which can advance and develop the industry which has ever been fostering of good deeds to its employes. "Resolved, That these preambles and resolutions be suitably engrossed and that they be presented to the President and Board of Directors of the Ernest Simons Manufacturing Company.

E. COLEMAN MEAD, JOSEPH HAMILL, FRANK E. ANYAN, MARILLA STARR."[17]
