Established in 1964, the band formed in the 14th Boys Brigade, who were based at Old Park Presbyterian Church. The band consisted of 3 Black brothers (Bill, Sam and youngest Stewart) and their friend Vernon. Originally called "The 14th Four", they quickly changed their name to The Folkweavers – after a curtain fabric known as folk weave). From 1964 to 1977 they were active on the church and young group circuit and appeared on television. Their most high profile performance was supporting Englebert Humperdinck at the Grove Theatre in Belfast, in 1967. In 1968 Joyce Heughan joined the group and performed intermittently.
