The Habitat Institute (THI) is a United States non-governmental organization founded in 1998, working in the fields of science and education. The Habitat Institute was formerly named Northwest Habitat Institute and is presently doing business as The Habitat Institute. The nonprofit's mission is "to create knowledge to enhance, maintain and value earth’s natural habitats and their biodiversity through time."[1] Currently, much of THI's work concentrates on implementation of an ecology-based habitat health indicator evaluation metric developed by their Founder and Chief Scientist Thomas A. O'Neill[2], known as Combined Habitat Assessment Protocols or CHAP. This modern framework is a triad assessment approach of species, habitats, and functions, and is implemented by U.S. federal and state regulatory agencies for Habitat Accounting and Appraisal.

Among their achievements, the appropriated funds to the Los Angeles River restoration project base on their collaboration with United States Army Corps of Engineers,[3] including an amount of 1.4 billion dollars for the City of Los Angeles,[4] relying on The Institute's Final Habitat Evaluation (CHAP) Los Angeles River Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study.[5]
