}}The Loan Companies is an upscale, US-based collateral lending firm that offers non-recourse loans secured by luxury assets such as jewelry, high-end timepieces, fine art, unique memorabilia, and auction-worthy handbags.

History

The flagship office of The Loan Companies, Beverly Loan Company located in Beverly Hills, California, was founded in 1938 by Louis Zimmelman. It is the oldest pawnshop in Beverly Hills. Known since its earliest years as the “Pawnshop to the Stars,” Zimmelman’s innovations included serving clients in a discreet office environment and providing for the safety of collateral with bank-vault security.[1][2] Operations were eventually handed off to Zimmelman’s two daughters, Jean and Helaine, who joined the business in 1988 and 1991, respectively.

In 2006, Louis Zimmelman’s grandson, Jordan Tabach-Bank, took the helm of Beverly Loan Company. The economic downturn and comparative lack of credit options beginning in 2008 allowed the company to expand their customer base.[3] The availability of collateral-based loans as an alternative to traditional, bank-based funding proved a boon to business and a valued service for everyone from celebrities to small business owners.[4][5][6]

In 2013, Beverly Loan Company rebranded as The Loan Companies. It also expanded into New York with the opening of New York Loan Company. Housed in New York City’s Diamond District, New York Loan Company was the first tenant[7] of the highly secure International Gem Tower.

A third office joined The Loan Companies when the company purchased Chicago’s T. N. Donnelly and rebranded it to Chicago Loan Company. Donnelly had been founded in 1881, making it the oldest continually operating pawnshop in the United States.[8] Chicago Loan Company renovated their suite in the historic Heyworth Building in Chicago’s Jewelers Row.

Services

The Loan Companies evaluates clients’ collateral to provide short-term, non-recourse loans secured by luxury assets.[9] Collateral loans funded by The Loan Companies allow borrowers to bypass the conventional banking and lending processes that require credit checks and lengthy application processes. The Loan Companies also offers customers the option of selling their items outright. Unlike traditional pawnbroking establishments[10], the upscale offices feature discreet, high-privacy meeting spaces in which clients can meet one-on-one with Loan Officers. The staff of professional Loan Officers includes gemologists, horological experts, and fine art specialists.[11]

Items accepted as collateral include signed jewelry by Tiffany & Co., Cartier, and Van Cleef & Arpels, as well as luxury timepieces by makers such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet.[12] At various times in the history of The Loan Companies, royal jewels and championship rings have been used to secure loans.[2][13] A lock of Elvis Presley’s hair was even presented for evaluation at one time.[14]

Fine handbags like those crafted by French leather goods firm Hermès are also accepted as collateral, a departure from the traditional assets with greater intrinsic value, such as precious metal jewelry.[12][15]

Artwork has also been offered as collateral, including works by well-regarded modern artists such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat to contemporary artists like Takashi Murakami, Jonas Wood, and Mark Bradford.[16]

In addition to lending and purchasing, The Loan Companies’ offices also offer items of fine jewelry, watches, artwork, handbags, and memorabilia for sale to the general public.
