The Mugdown publishes articles and multimedia content of campus interest to its website and across various social media platforms. HistoryThe Mugdown was founded in January 2014 by six students at Texas A&M University with the mission of bettering the university by providing a new avenue in which to discuss campus issues.[1]The name is derived from the tradition of “mugging down,” or kissing one’s date at Midnight Yell Practice. The publication’s staff is anonymous during their time in the organization in order to direct the reader’s attention away from the writer and towards the article’s mission. Graduating members of The Mugdown are announced prior to graduation during the semi-annual “Coming Out Day.”[2] The Mugdown does not receive student fees and is not subject to university editorial oversight. Special ProjectsCorps PropagandaIn April 2015, The Mugdown placed satirical propaganda posters in the university’s Academic Plaza highlighting the tension between Greek Life and the Corps of Cadets, particularly in regards to the election of Yell Leaders. The signs were interpreted both as anti-Fraternity and anti-Corps and sparked controversy across campus and social media.[3][4] Corps of Cadets: The MusicalIn May 2016, The Mugdown produced Corps of Cadets: The Musical, an original musical theater production lampooning the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets.[5][6] The musical, written by senior cadet Rob Bannon, was performed in two showings in Rudder Auditorium.[7] Ticket and merchandise sales raised $34,000, and proceeds were donated to the Lone Survivor Foundation and to establish an Endowed Aggie Ring Scholarship for student veterans.[8] Elect The MugdownIn the spring semester of 2017, The Mugdown ran a stunt campaign to submit “The Mugdown” as a write-in alternative candidate for student body elections. The Mugdown was submitted on over 3,500 ballots and received the most votes in six races. All ballots cast in favor of The Mugdown were nullified by the Student Government Association.[9] As part of the campaign, The Mugdown raised "campaign donations" to benefit [https://www.twincitymission.org Twin City Mission], a non-profit aimed at addressing homelessness and hunger in Brazos County.[10] LAKEVIEW PodcastIn April 2018, The Mugdown produced its first podcast, titled LAKEVIEW. The parody true-crime podcast follows a fictitious student reporter investigating a homicide at Fish Camp, Texas A&M's extended freshman orientation retreat.[11]
