The Palace, Chichester is a medieval palace located at the West End of Canon Lane in Chichester - the Cathedral close of Chichester Cathedral. It is the official residence and offices of the Bishop of Chichester, The Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner and the Archdeacon of Chichester, The Venerable Luke Irvine-Capel, as well as the Archdeacon’s family. History, Arcitecture and WorksIt is a grade 1 listed medieval palace. Construction originally started in the 12th Century, as shown on the walls of the Great Kitchen. Other than this, the earliest markings are in the Chapel from the early 13th Century. Reconstruction of the Chapel took place in the 14th Century under the work of Bishop John Langton]. Bishop Robert Sherborne undertook major construction projects at the Palace, including the remodelling of the south-west and south-east wings. Bishop Sherborne also had a wing built to the north of the west end. The bottom story of this wing is named the ‘Sherborne Room’, in memory of the Bishop. Bishop Edward Waddington restored the Palace from a ruinous condition in 1727. Bishop John Buckner also restored and altered the building in 1800. ChapelThe east window dates from the 14th Century. In the window are. Number f medallions and panels of the arms of previous bishops. Within the jambs are carved stiffleaf foliage. The walling is of Quarr Abbey stone as well as a little flint. There are four further ancient windows on the north wall. The two central bosses in the vaulting are also decorated with foliage. On the south wall there is a painting of the Virgin and Child. GardensThe Palace gardens, maintained by Chichester City Council, offer views of the Palace, Chichester Cathedral and the Cathedral’s bell tower. A recent reject has seen the addition of rare champion trees as well as the creation of a wildlife friendly area and a pergola walk. The city’s Roman city wall can be accessed from these gardens. Vegetable gardening also happens at the Palace gardens and these patches are owned by a charity. |
