The Pied Piper Children's Theater (PPCT) is a local community theatre based in Inwood, New York in Upper Manhattan. Currently in its 20th season, the theatre has presented over 100 productions and hosted over 5,000 people from upper Manhattan, Bronx, and New York City communities. The theater was founded by former Artistic and Executive Director Reinaldo (Rey-Rey) Martinez-Cubero in 1999. Cubero noticed the unused, empty theatre space within the Holy Episcopal Church in Inwood, New York and discussed with the vicar and reverend of the church his vision. Collectively, it was decided that they would make it a space for children ages 5-18 regardless of race, color, religious belief, gender, or sexual orientation to experience free, beneficial, and educational theatre, both with workshops and full-blown productions, both modern, Greek, and Shakespeare. It was helped brought to the city's attention by famous Broadway star Sutton Foster, Rey-Rey's longtime friend, who co-produced and starred in a benefit concert version of Snoopy to commemorate the theatre’s 5th anniversary. The production included other famous Broadway stars, most notably Ann Harada and Christian Borle. HistoryThe founder of PPCT, Reinaldo (Rey-Rey) Martinez-Cubero served as the Artistic Director for the theater from 1999-2013 and then left to join the Holy Cross Monastery in New York to serve as a lifelong monk. He was replaced shortly thereafter by Phill Greenland for about a year, and then was abruptly replaced by Yvonne Bill, who is still currently serving on the board as Artistic Director. Past productionsThe first production at PPCT was Snow White, and since then the productions have ranged from Shakespearean classics such as A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo and Juliet to more modern productions, such as Thoroughly Modern Millie and Oklahoma! Summer IntensivesEvery summer from June-August the space is used 5 days a week to hold classes in dance, acting, voice and speech, Shakespeare training, and stage combat for adolescents 12-18. Many of the teachers are parents or friends of members of the theatre that are willing to give their time to educate the adolescents. There are monologues and songs assigned per participant to study throughout the program that is then merged into a showcase to raise money for the theatre at the end of the program. In former years, there was the option to be an intern and even be paid to be a part of the program, but this option has become unavailable as the theatre is not gaining as much revenue as it has in previous years. The price of tuition has also raised in more recent years in order to be a participant. The PPCT Actors' SocietyThe Pied Piper Actors' Society (PPCT) is an exclusive group that consists of up to twenty young adults that are currently in the theater. Included are four members that serve on a board as a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Communications Officer (running the social media pages.) In order to be part of the society, you are required to have participated in or worked on at least five previous PPCT productions, and demonstrated qualities of teamwork and leadership. The society meets once a month in order to discuss the current state and future of the theater, discussing and deciding upcoming productions and planning for the seasons, brainstorming ideas for fundraising, cleaning the space, pitching ideas for success, etc. Requirements include no absences from the meetings and participating in each show throughout the seasons. Open Mic NightsOnce a month, PPCT will host Open Mic Nights to raise money for the theater. It is $5 for admission and a piano accompanist is provided for performers. Families are asked to bring their own dinners and tables are set up for an evening enjoyed with performances of both current, past, and/or future participants of the theater, or whoever feels like performing. It has become a big part of the Inwood community. It is asked that only family friendly acts participate. The Future of PPCTCurrently there are big changes happening within the theater. The current Reverend, Jake Dell, has decided that the Holy Episcopal Church will no longer support the theater with the space. PPCT is currently asking for donations and suggestions for a new space, in order to keep the theater going. The next upcoming production is Shrek: The Musical, directed by Colleen Hawks-Pierce.
