The Ready Stance is an indie rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio. Comprised of veterans from well-known Cincinnati acts Ass Ponys (A&M Records), Middlemarch, and Black Owls, the band had completed work on their second full-length LP, slated for release in early 2017, when website updates and online mentions of the release abruptly ceased without explanation. Persistent rumors about a mental-health issue within the band have not been confirmed by band members. Some members have since been credited on recordings by other artists and have performed with other acts, but none have spoken publicly about the circumstances surrounding The Ready Stance.

In 2017 acclaimed filmmaker Emily Hubley created and directed a short film set to the song Paraffin, with audio track from upcoming album. Hubley's film incorporates her trademark animation style and closely follows the song's narrative lyrics, as written by Wesley Pence. The lyric frames the tragic life of Gladys Deacon as social commentary about cosmetic surgery, ego and entitlement. Hubley's film was was screened on closing night of the Montclair Film Festival and at other festivals in the United States and Europe. Formal release was intended to accompany album by The Ready Stance, as a promotional music video. Further information about the film has not been shared by the band.

The new album was a follow-up to the bands 2012 debut, Damndest, which was praised by critics in the U.S., U.K., and European press for the breakout vocal and guitar performances of frontman Chase Johnston and the songwriting and storytelling lyrics of Wesley Pence. The album was favorably compared to R.E.M.'s masterful, Life's Rich Pageant by Big Takeover Magazine in 2012.

The Ready Stance recording lineup featured founding members, Chase Johnston and Wesley Pence, with newer members, bassist/vocalist Randy Cheek, and drummer Brian Kitzmiller bringing expanded dynamics and energy to the band's sound. The new album is said to have been composed through a more collaborative approach, with major contributions by Johnston and Cheek to the songwriting process, previously undertaken by only Pence on Damndest. The band recorded with an array of vintage equipment in an analog-to-digital process at Pence's Damndest Recordings (studio) in Newport, Kentucky, and mixed with engineer Ashley Shepherd (Peter Frampton),who had worked in same capacity on their 2012 debut.
