The United Jewish Community of Ukraine or UJCU in short is a All-Ukrainian Jewish Non-governmental organization. President of organization is Ihor Kolomoyskyi. CEO is Michael Tkach.

The organization includes 120 Jewish communities from all over Ukraine.

Founded in 1999 on the initiative of Vadim Rabinovich with the support of Moshe Reuven Azman. Founders and members of the community are Jewish public organizations and associations. The head office is located in the Menorah center, Dnipro (Dnipropetrovsk).

Goal and objectives

The purpose of the UJCU’s activities is to develop the Jewish way of life in Ukraine and abroad, and to strengthen ties between Jewish communities and organizations.

The organization has the following tasks:

  • To unite Jews of Ukraine in common information space and around the Jewish way of life, knowledge and traditions;
  • To represents the interests of the Jewish community of Ukraine in the world;
  • To help every Jew in Ukraine in his social, cultural and everyday life;
  • To intensify Jewish communities’ activities through our projects implementation.

Managers

In 2008 the VI Congress of UJCU took place, before which the term of Vadim Rabinovich management was finished. Igor Kolomoisky was elected by the single-member decision of delegates as the president of UJCU. In 2012, at the VII Congress of UJCU, Ihor Kolomoyskyi was reelected for a new term, 264 delegates from 298 voted for him.

In 2014 Michael Tkach was appointed as the CEO of UJCU.

Activities

The UJCU constantly provides financial assistance to Jews - victims of Nazism and World War II veterans. Thanks to this program, 16,000 Jews in Ukraine regularly receive financial assistance.

The category of recipients of this assistance includes Jews-victims of Nazism, veterans and widows of Second World War participants, children of war, ghetto prisoners.

The united Jewish community of Ukraine has initiated regular payments of financial assistance to socially vulnerable groups of the population since September 2016. (Until 2016, assistance was provided in the form of food packages).

The United Jewish Community of Ukraine has initiated regular payments of financial assistance to socially vulnerable groups of the population since September 2016. (Until 2016, assistance was provided in the form of food packages).

In 2016, payments were made four times - in September, October, November and December.

From April to November 2017, the UJCU monthly gave financial aid to Jews who are on the list of recipients of this assistance.

In 2018, financial assistance was timed to coincide with the most significant holidays. In March 2018, a financial assistance tranche was held on March 8, as a result of which remittances were sent to beneficiary bank cards.

On Passover 2018, the United Jewish Community of Ukraine, together with VAAD of Ukraine, distributed 17 tons of matzah.

In May 2018, on Victory Day, all Jews belonging to the categories of people who suffered during or as a result of the Second World War received financial aid from UJCU.

In September 2018, the United Jewish Community of Ukraine expanded the category of recipients of material assistance by including children of war in the list.

On December 29, 2018, on the occasion of the new fiscal year, charitable assistance was paid to each of the 16,000 Jews-victims of Nazism and World War II veterans, as well as to the children of the war.

At the end of 2018, 120 Jewish communities from all over Ukraine became members of the UJCU. According to Tkach, these are practically all of the actually functioning Jewish communities in Ukraine, with the exception of a few communities.

One of the main goals declared by the OEOU is the fight against anti-Semitism in Ukraine. Since 2018, the organization has been continuously monitoring cases of manifestations of anti-Semitism in the country through the Jewish hotline “910”. As a result of this work, in February 2019, the United Jewish Community of Ukraine presented the report “Anti-Semitism in Ukraine - 2018”, which was published on the Jewish News website. The Russian and English versions of the document are available for viewing and downloading.
