It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. The series is produced by Marvel Studios, with Schaeffer serving as showrunner. Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen reprise their respective, title roles from the film series. In September 2018, it was reported that Marvel Studios was developing a number of limited series for Disney+, centered on "second tier" characters from the MCU films such as Scarlet Witch, with the expectation that Olsen would reprise the role. The following month, Vision was expected to be a part of the series, with Bettany reprising that role, allowing the series to focus on the duo's relationship. Schaeffer was hired in January 2019. DevelopmentIn September 2018, it was reported that Marvel Studios was developing several limited series for Disney's streaming service, Disney+, to be centered on "second tier" characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films who had not and were unlikely to star in their own films, such as Scarlet Witch; actors who portrayed the characters in the films were expected to reprise their roles for the limited series, including Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. The series were expected to be six to eight episodes each, have a "hefty [budget] rivaling those of a major studio production", and be produced by Marvel Studios rather than Marvel Television who produced other television series in the MCU; Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was set to take a "hands-on role" in each series' development, focusing on "continuity of story" with the films and "handling" the actors who would be reprising their roles from the films.[2] By the end of October, Paul Bettany's Vision was expected to play a large role in the series, which would focus on the duo's relationship.[3] In the following months, the titles Vision and the Scarlet Witch and The Vision and Scarlet Witch were both reported.[4][5][6] In January 2019, Jac Schaeffer was hired as showrunner of the series after previously working as a writer on the films Captain Marvel (2019) and Black Widow (2020) for Marvel Studios.
