Created exclusively by Joe S. Khera (Director, [https://www.wiftai.com/ WIFT India]), the ‘Wyler Award for Excellence in Direction’ (aka “the Wyler”) is an honorary WIFT Award bestowed by WIFT India upon a female director who has shown exceptional distinction in the craft of direction. The award is named after legendary Oscar-winning director William Wyler (Roman Holiday, Ben-Hur) and his daughter Catherine Wyler (Memphis Belle, Witness to Hope: The Life of Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II).^[1][2] Annually, the WIFT India board of directors selects one honoree from a pool of global nominees who have made a significant mark in cinema.

The Wyler is the first and only award from the WIFT global network of over forty chapters to be named in honour of the Wylers. William Wyler is the most nominated director in Academy Awards history with twelve nominations - winning the Academy Award for Best Direction three times, for Ben-Hur, The Best Years Of Our Lives, and Mrs. Miniver. He is tied with Frank Capra and behind John Ford, who won four Oscars in this category. William Wyler is the only director in Oscar history to direct three Best Picture-winning films and to direct more Best Picture nominees (thirteen) than anyone else. Film producer Catherine Wyler is the founding Artistic Director of the Rochester/High Falls International Film Festival in Rochester, New York. She has played a key role in the creation of the Sundance Institute and other media organizations. Catherine has also served as Senior Vice President of Production at Columbia Pictures and Director of Cultural and Children’s Programming at PBS. Currently she serves on advisory committees for the National Gallery of Art, Women in Film and Video and the Environmental Film Festival in Washington, D.C.^[3]

The inaugural recipient of the award was critically acclaimed director Zoya Akhtar. "The Wyler Award is so surreal for me as I grew up in Bombay (Mumbai), got a video player in the eighties and one of the first films I ever saw on it was Ben-Hur," Akhtar told The Hollywood Reporter.^[4]
