Tomoko Sauvage (* in Yokohama, Japan) is a Paris based musician working primarily in the field of electroacoustic music. Her style is influenced by Jazz, Hindustani and Carnatic music. MusicInfluencesGrowing up in Tokyo, Tomoko Sauvage's early musical influences include the works of ethnomusicologist Fumio Koizumi and Jazz singer Akiko Yano, who "influenced [her] so much that [she] started to cultivate [her] passion for jazz". [1] After receiving a degree in Liberal Arts from the International Christian University in Tokyo (1998) she went on to study jazz-piano at the The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City (1998-2000). [2] In 2003 Sauvage moved to Paris, where she took Hindustani improvisation lessons with flautist Henri Tournier. These lessons however "[weren't] strictly respecting Indian music’s notions of harmony" as they took place on the piano, an instrument, which despite playing it from a young age caused some dissonance with Tomoko Sauvage's Japanese background: " [...] there was something uncomfortable about playing only old European music and also about how this instrument didn’t fit a Japanese house – it didn’t sound right with lots of humidity, in a small Tatami room with paper Fusuma doors…"[1]In 2006 [1] she attended a performance by Aanayampatti Ganesan, playing the jal tarang upon which she based her "natural synthesiser" (see below). [3] Sauvage is invested in the DIY-art and -music scenes as well as various pedagogical projects. Since 2016 she is working on the project "green music" together with Francesco Cavaliere, which is based on visual concepts.[4] Natural SynthesizerTomoko Sauvage performs on a "hydro-aquatic" [3] instrument, based on the jal tarang, It consists of multiple water filled ceramic bowls that are excited with wooden spoons and metal wire [5] and amplified using hydrophones. [6] The resulting signals are then being processed with live electronics and played back via loudspeakers. "The oscillating waves, drops, and air bubbles [...] in the water create subaquatic feedbacks, that the artist modulates" [3] by "moving the water with her hands", creating a pitch-bend effect. [1] Due to its reliance on feedback, Sauvage's natural synthesiser in affected by the speaker placement, its sonic environment's air-temperature, -humidity, overall acoustics, the amount of water in the bowls [1] and subtle playback volume control.
