Tom Riis Farrell (born August 17, 1959) is an award-winning American stage, television and film actor and is widely known for his portrayal of Bill Harper in the television series Mr. Robot.

Early Life

Born Thomas H. Farrell to Edna and Edward Farrell in Oceanside, New York.[1] Farrell was the youngest of seven children. At a young age, he recalled being "furious" at the disingenuous crying of a child actor in an episode of the Brady Bunch which motivated him to pursue a career in acting despite his parents' objections.[2]

Education

Farrell graduated from Archbishop Molly High School[3] in 1977 and went on earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Union College in Schenectady, New York in 1981.[4] He was the "only arts major with a theater emphasis to graduate that year."[5]

Career

Upon joining the Screen Actors Guild, Farrell had to change his name as there was already a Tom Farrell.[5]

Film

Since 1991, Farrell has made appearances in over a dozen films including Sleepless in Seattle, The Out-Of-Towners, and the 2004 remake of The Stepford Wives.[6] His most recent film appearance is in the 2016 sci-fi comedy Future '38.

Television

One of Farrell's earliest appearances in television was the 1985 Nickelodeon sketch comedy Turkey Television where he played Uncle Hogram in the Uncle Hogram Program segment.[7] Farrell has appeared in over twenty television series including performances in The Americans, Blue Bloods and multiple appearances in Law & Order and NYPD Blue.[8] Farrell will make regular appearances in the NBC television drama series Rise beginning in Spring 2018.[9]

Mr. Robot

Farrell made two appearances as the character Bill Harper in the USA Network's Mr. Robot television drama series. As a target of an elaborate social engineering campaign in the first episode, Harper is harshly belittled by the series’ protagonist in an effort to gain unauthorized access to a data center. Following the airing of the episode, Farrell stated during a guest interview with The Verge that he had received e-mails, messages and fan art from viewers all over the world that were concerned for his well-being[10]. Fans of the show created a Bill Harper Reddit subreddit page[11], and the social engineering of Bill Harper has served as an example of the technique in several computer hacking and security articles.[12][13][14]

Stage

Farrell made one of his first stage appearances in the 1992 musical A Backers Audition[6], earning recognition from the New York Times for his portrayal of the character Haji.[15] He has since gone on to appear in well over a dozen Broadway, off Broadway and touring plays and musicals including Chicago, 1776, Disaster![16][17] and was featured in the 2013 remake of A.R. Gurney's The Old Boy.[18][19] Farrell was highly praised by Variety[20], won the Helen Hayes Award and was nominated for the Joseph Jefferson Award for his performance in the play Dirty Blonde.[21][22] He has also received recognition from The New York Theater Guide[23] for his performance in the 2013 revival of The Caucasian Chalk Circle.
