Anthony Donovan O'Connor (17 February 1918 - 30 January 2006)[1] was a British teacher who was appointed Head Teacher of Bearwood Primary School in Smethwick in September 1967 and became Britain's first Black headmaster.[2]

Biography

O'Connor was born in Westmorland, Jamaica.[3]

In 1938, when he was twenty, Tony O'Connor began teaching at the Independent High School, Kingston, Jamaica. He joined the RAF in 1943 and rose to the rank of Flight Sargeant. In 1947 he studied for a Teachers' Certificate at Worcester Teacher Training College. In 1949 he joined the staff at St Matthews Church of England Primary School, Smethwick. He became chief assistant teacher in 1955 and deputy head in 1957. During the academic year 1961/62 he took a Diploma in Education at the University of Birmingham. He first applied to be Head Teacher of Bearwood Primary School in 1963 but was unsuccessful.[4] He retired in 1983.[5]

The day after the press announcement the school was daubed with racist slogans and swastikas. [6] A few years earlier Smethwick had achieved a reputation for poor race relations which included the election of Peter Griffiths, a Member of Parliament committed to ending immigration from the Commonwealth.

Four months after his appointment as Head Teacher Tony O'Connor was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace.{{clarify-inline|reason=did he change jobs? how long did he work there?}}[7]

A campaign was launched in 2017 to commemorate and chart Tony O'Connor's work and life.[8][9]
