Town of Salem is an online browser video game inspired by "accusation & deception" party games such as Mafia[1] created and distributed by BlankMediaGames. The name is referring to the Salem witch-trials between February 1692 and May 1693 and was released on 15. December 2014 after a successful Kickstarter campaign.[2] The game is currently available through BlankMediaGames' website, App Store, Google Play, Steam and as a physical card game.[3] GameplayA game can have 7-15 players depending on which game mode is currently played. Players pick a name they will go by during the game. The name can be changed each game. Players are randomly assigned a role divided into three main factions: the town, the mafia, and neutral.[4][5]
Game phases and discussionLike Mafia, the game follows a basic day-night cycle where most roles perform their action during the night phase. When the night phase ends the town "wakes up" and the game interface explains which players have been eliminated, and in most cases, which role eliminated them. After this has been established, the players chat between themselves to find out who to trust and who to lynch. After 45 seconds of discussion, players can vote for other players to be put on trial. If on third of the players vote on a player, they are put on trial and given 30 seconds to defend themselves without interruption. After the time is up, everyone else votes on whether to eliminate the player or not. If the majority votes yes the player gets 5 seconds to say their last words and are then executed, their role and will revealed for everyone. The night phase then begins anew. If the majority votes no, the player is put off trial and discussion resumes. There can be up to three trials in one day. NotesAll players also have a "last will" that is revealed upon their death. This note can be used to keep track on what the player did during the night and other information the player found noteworthy. If the player is in the (killing) division, they have the opportunity to leave a "death note" that will be shown to everyone along with the eliminated players last will if the killing was successful.
