It is a strategy and deception game based largely on the party game Mafia. The game was funded by an early 2014 Kickstarter campaign, which raised $17,190 from 576 backers.[1] In late 2014, BlankMediaGames started a second Kickstarter campaign to get the game published on Steam, localized, and fund porting the game to mobile devices.[2] Town of Salem was released on Steam on December 15, 2014[3] and on iOS and Android on October 14, 2018.[4]

Gameplay

Town of Salem has a total of 48 roles assigned randomly to players at the start of the game, and each game has between 7 and 15 players. There is an in-game text chat players can use to communicate with one another during the day and certain roles or groups (such as the Mafia or the Jailor) that receive their own text chat at night.

Data breach

On January 2, 2019, BlankMediaGames announced on their forum that there had been an intrusion on their systems, affecting over 8 million users and exposing 7.6 million email addresses. Compromised data included user emails, usernames, passwords, IP addresses, as well as forum account data and activity.[5][6] As of January 5, 2019 at least 27% of the compromised passwords had been cracked.[7] BlankMediaGames developer 'Achilles' claimed that the breach did not disclose any user credit card information or payment info, stating "To clarify, we do not handle money. At all. The third party payment processors are the ones that handle all of that. We never see your credit card, payment information, anything like that. We don't have access to that information".[8]

Card game

In April 2016, BlankMediaGames began another Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of a Town of Salem card game. The card version is directly based on the video game version of the game, and additionally featured an NSFW version of the deck. Backers would receive rewards in the video games as well as contribute to funding goals that unlocked new features and additions to the deck.[9] The campaign received massive support, with funding totaling $389,005 (of a $10,000 goal) from 9,551 backers. The game began shipping to backers in January of 2017, with the regular version selling for $25 and the NSFW version selling for $35.[10] A second card game, Town of Salem's The Savior of Salem, was also funded on Kickstarter and began shipping to backers on June 14, 2018.[11]
