The first match was played in 17 March 1972, during the 2nd Arabian Gulf Cup, with the UAE beating Qatar 1–0. UAE and Qatar had 29 matches so far. Almost all of them have been competitive and only two of them were friendlies. In the 29 of January 2019, many UAE fans have criticized the Qatari national team for having too many naturalized citizens in the national team instead of Qatari citizens. Some Emiratis even nicknamed Qatar “World FC”, this lead to UAE police issuing a warning to Emirati fans that making fun of Qatar can lead to 250,000 AED fine.[2] During UAE semi final match against Qatar, many fans threw bottles, shoes and many other items at the Qatari players in protest against the match. The match ended with a 4–0 Qatari victory which angered millions of Emirati fans around the UAE.[3] OriginsQatar and UAE like the rest of the gulf states were friendly rivals who mostly competed in the gulf cup against each other, however in 2017, UAE along with Bahrain and Saudi Arabia boycotted Qatar[4][5][6] due to political tensions. As a result both national teams have been never been friendly towards each other and captain of the UAE youth team have refused to shake hands with Qatar's youth Captain.[7]MatchesSource:[8][9] # | Date | Competition | Venue | Home team | Score | Away team |
