Ubimax is an augmented and assisted reality software platform company providing smart glass software for workers in manufacturing, maintenance, and logistics. Ubimax is a global company with locations in Germany, the United States, and Mexico; serving over 250 companies.

History

Early History

The three Ubimax Founders, Dr. Hendrik Witt, Jan Junker, and Percy Stocker met 2004 during their previous employment as consultants for Arthur D Little.[1]

In 2004 Dr. Hendrik Witt co-headed an EU funded project entitled wearIT@work, which looked at how to use wearables and augmented reality for industrial and enterprise cases.[2]

The three founders saw the potential use cases and broad customer base for AR software and wearables for the deskless workforce.ref>https://venturebeat.com/2018/09/08/the-deskless-workforce-a-massive-opportunity-for-entrepreneurs/ And so, began the startup company. First called xConPartners when founded in 2011, the name soon changed to Ubimax GmbH with its headquarters in Bremen, Germany.[3] Ubimax other early locations included Frankfurt and Munich with staff members present at each.

2014-2017

Ubimax made its first launch of software in 2014, with the launch of xPick. xPick was the world’s first productive order picking software that ran on Smart Glasses.[4] It is currently being utilized by companies worldwide such as DHL, Samsung and Volkswagen.[5]

Five years after the company’s founding in 2016, Ubimax was backed by Series A venture capital through Atlantic Bridge Capital and Westcott LLC.[6] These investors have an interest in augmented reality and wearable computing.[7] Atlantic Bridge Capital and Westcott LLC were investors for Metaio an AR platform company before its acquisition by Apple in 2015.[6]

Ubimax also created their own patented wrist RFID scanner, the xBand to aid in smart order picking.[8] This is the only hardware that Ubimax produces, it is blue tooth capable to enhance the hands-free work processes through scanning as workers grab from boxes, bins or shelves, indicating the product picking to the glasses.

2017 yielded Ubimax multiple awards for their innovation such as the AWE Auggie Award[9] for “Best Enterprise Software,” in addition to the MHI Innovation Award for “Best IT innovation”.[10]

2018 to Present

Ubimax has gained attention for being a software platform compatible with both android and windows 10 platforms.[11] Additionally the software is hardware agnostic supporting smart glasses of different vendors among others: Epson, ODG, Vuzix, Realwear, Microsoft, Google Glass, Toshiba.[12] Furthermore, their recent partnerships have placed them in a position as a market leader in wearable computing software.[13]

Applications

Ubimax software is a tool for industry 4.0. The software connects wearable computing devices with the company IT (ERP, warehouse management system, production management system) and provides the frontline workers with augmented reality based task-related information displayed either on a smart glass, a smartwatch, tablet or mobile. Input in the form of code scans, touch, gesture, IoT data, voice or video is interpreted to confirm e.g. completed tasks or procedure steps. Through these uses, the software integrates humans into the industrial internet of things, IoT.[14]

Case study

Audi is one of Ubimax’s current customers.[15] Audi utilizes Ubimax’s xMake in its smart factory. Audi uses both the Google Glass Enterprise Edition glasses and the Ubimax Frontline software to support and aid the manufacturing processes in engine assembly. The information shared in the worker’s field of vision includes processes that help workers to carry out their tasks hands-free, without needing to check paper or tablet instructions or materials.
