He was born in 1938 in Bussi sul Tirino (Pescara), and now lives and works in Milan. La Pietra received his degree in Architecture in 1964 at Politecnico di Milano. In 1979, he received the Compasso d'Oro, the most prestigious industrial design award in Italy, for the project "L’occultamento" ("Concealing"). [1] In 2016, he was awarded another Compasso d'Oro for lifetime achievement. [2] La Pietra has taken part in more than 900 solo and group exhibitions worldwide. [1] Ugo La Pietra has taught at the Politecnico di Milano, Istituto d’Arte in Monza, Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche (Higher Institute for Artistic Industries) in Faenza, Istituto Europeo di Design (in Milan), and many others. [3] In 2001, he founded the Department of Artistic Design for Enterprise at Brera Academy (Milan).[4] In 1973, La Pietra became artistic director of the publishing house Jabik & Colophon in Milan. He was the editor of the magazines IN, INPIÙ, Brera Flash, Fascicolo Area, Abitare il tempo. In addition, he was the editor of Domus in the 1980s. [5] In addition, La Pietra is the author of many films: "La grande occasione" (1973) for the XV Triennale in Milan, "II Monumentalismo" (1974), "Per oggi basta!" (1974), "La ricerca della mia identità" (1974/75), "La riappropriazione della città" (1977), and others. [6] In 2005, his films were acquired by the Fondazione Cineteca Italiana.[7] Major works and exhibitions1960sIn 1962, he was one of the founders of the Gruppo del Cenobio.[5] During this period, La Pietra developed his theory of synesthesia among the arts ("La sinestesia tra le arti"), [1] which was "a creative process (of direct sensorial, intellectual and emotional transportation) ranging over all formal disciplines, with only the “sign” in common." [8] He was actively involved in the radical design movement, and was running the important quarterly magazines IN and Inpiù.[9] He also organized the first exhibition on radical design called “Gli abiti dell’imperatore” (The emperor’s clothes). [1] In 1967, he formulated his theory of Disequilibrating system. [10] La Pietra was actively experimenting with new materials and technologies. In 1969, Ugo La Pietra, Aldo Jacober and Paolo Rizzatto designed the Altre Cose ("Other things") boutique in Milan, which was connected to Milan’s first disco, Bang Bang, by an inclined lift. The clothes were contained in large cylindrical methacrylate containers hanging from the ceiling. [11] 1970sThe 1970s were the years of intense research and experimentation with a wide range of expressive media: La Pietra explored drawing, photography, film, carried out "urban interventions" and performances. One of the main themes of his work has been an observation of urban dynamics, relationship between the city environment and its inhabitants. As pointed out in "SuperDesign: Italian Radical Design 1965-75", La Pietra "developed new tools of knowledge ("models for understanding"), to transform the traditional connection between a work and a viewer, using photography, film, and video, to document his investigations in these realms." [1] In 1970, La Pietra realized one of his hallmark projects: "Il Commutatore" ("The Commuter"), an exploration of the urban environment. In 1972, he took part in the famous exhibition called "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" at MoMA with his project "Telematic House – Living Cell". [12] This project, according to La Pietra, "illustrated the use of telematics and computers inside the inhabited space, not only as a place to receive, but also as a place to divulge messages in urban space". [3] In 1973, Ugo La Pietra, together with Ettore Sottsass and Andrea Branzi, founded Global Tools, a pioneering group of architects, designers and radical artists”. [5] 1980sLa Pietra focuses on the theme of memory: the project "Three Dimensional – Two Dimensional Memory", 1980, the exhibition at the 1980 Venice Biennial titled “Cronografie”, where he investigates the two principles (time and memory) in relation to human life. [13] In 1983, La Pietra was one of the curators of the exhibition titled "The Telematic House" in Milan. This exhibition explored the implications of bringing the growing electronic memory together with the domestic space. Other major works during this decade are "Abitare il Tempo" (1986), "The Garden of Earthly Delights" (1980-86), "Bathing Culture" (1985-1995). 1990sDuring this decade, he developed the themes of diversity, focusing on the tradition of Italian artistic craftsmanship. For this collection of works, he used the traditional materials and craftsmanship techniques from various regions in Italy (e.g., objects made from Volterra alabasters, Carrara marble, Apricena stone, lava stone, travertine, as well as ceramics from Grottaglie, the Ravenna and Monreale mosaics, etc.). [14] La Pietra curated the "Life between things and nature" section at the XVIII Triennale di Milano, and created the “Mediterranean Landscape” installation at the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon. Other notable projects during this period include "The New Territoriality", "Genius Loci", "Unity in Diversity". [15] 2000-2010La Pietra continues to explore the theme of "territoriality" in his drawings, ceramics, and installations. [16] La Pietra was the art director and designer of the exhibition “Dai giornali ai portali” ("From newspapers to web-portals"), held in Milan in 2001.[17] In 2014, at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan opened a comprehensive monographic exhibition of La Pietra's works titled "Ugo La Pietra. Disequilibrating Design", which was curated by Angela Rui. [18] Bibliography
