The Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, in India, is an institutional forum established in 1984 as a public charitable trust with the aim of enriching the understanding of the urban environment and working towards its improvement.^[1]It was created by a group of concerned citizens who served as its founding trustees: Mr Ratan Tata, Mr Nani Palkhiwala, Mr Nana Chudasama, Mr Charles Correa, Mr Wadud Khan and Mr Keshub Mahindra^[2]

It is set up to address the question of the physical form and the urbanisation of the city and their impact on the quality of life on the citizens of Mumbai. UDRI provides a forum for interaction of urban professionals and making resources concerned with urban issues accessible to the general public.^[3] Urban planning and policy, urban design and heritage conservation are the core concerns of UDRI.^[4] UDRI facilitates the interaction between the public and architects, urban designers and professionals, by an integrated system of public lectures, exhibitions, forums, publications, research programs and projects, to encapsulate cityʼs problems and to propose practical solutions for improvement.^[5]^[6]
