FormationThe Ursulines of Brown County arrived in St. Martin in northern Brown County, Ohio in 1845 and has been serving the rural area ever since.[1] MembersCurrently, the Ursulines of Brown County have 23 members from 61- 95 years of age.[2] Ursuline Academy of CincinnatiThe Ursuline Sisters of Brown County established Ursuline Academy in 1896.[3] It began as a day school in the city of Cincinnati on the corner of Oak and May Streets, in a home previously owned by the Ryan Family. The school would serve boys and girls through eighth grade, and girls only in the high school grades. The Ursulines held the first day of classes on September 16, and because the mother house in Brown County did not have a telephone, the nuns there waited anxiously for a telegram bringing news of success or failure. With hearts full of gratitude, they read the telegram that was sent: "Opened with 40 pupils. Deo gratias(Thanks be to God)".[4] LegacyRecently the Sisters made the unanimous decision to sell their property to Chatfield College, which the Ursulines founded in 1971, effective July 1, 2017, and to sell/auction the farmland in the near future.
