Valree J. Joshua (August 23, 1920-December 3, 2012)[1] arrived in Vancouver, Washington from Gilmer, Texas in the 1944 with her husband Joseph.[2][1] She became an active member and founder of the Vancouver Branch of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), serving 29 years as its president.[3] As residents of war housing in the McLoughlin Heights area, Val and Joseph actively worked with the NAACP and the Vancouver Housing Authority (VHA) to integrate housing for African Americans.[4] Joshua’s stated mission for “elimination of racism in all of its forms wherever it exists” extended into her work for the Racial Justice Task Force, providing assistance for the discriminated and training for groups toward resolution of cultural differences.[5] She was also a longtime member of the Clark County chapter of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) and started a program with the organization in 1973 called WORTH, a volunteer effort offering life skills to inmates at the Clark County jail.[6][7] Joshua obtained a Master’s in Education from Lewis and Clark College and taught at the Washington State School for the Deaf for 22 years.[8] Her legacy is commemorated each year by the Vancouver YWCA through its Joshua Racial Justice Award and Val Joshua Youth Social Justice Award.[5] Joshua died at the age of 92 in Vancouver, Washington.[1]
