Vernon Hill (born 25 August 1944) is a professional Australian flautist and educator who has had an influence in helping to improve the quality of flute playing in Australia. He further developed the traditions established by Leslie Barklamb (Melbourne), Victor McMahon (Sydney) and subsequently James Carson (Brisbane) to establish a comprehensive School of Flute Playing. This culminated in the publication of his flute playing manual, “The Flute Players Book with demonstration CD”.[1].{{Infobox musical artist

Early Life

He was born in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia on 25th August 1944, the youngest of three children. It was towards the end of the Second World War and his father, Eric, who was considered to be working in essential services, was transferred to Townsville in North Queensland when Vernon was 2 years old. While they were in Townsville, his mother Iris became sick with Tuberculosis (TB) the family moved back to Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. She died in 1950 when Vernon was 6 years old. Vernon attended Wilston State School which had a very active Drum and Fife band. Every school day began with a formal assembly of the entire school, the fife band would play the national anthem, and then the children would march to their classroom to the sound of the drum and fife band.

Vernon was introduced to the fife by his big brother Ross, who showed him how to play at about the age of 5 or 6, and he took a liking to it. Before long he was accepted into the school band, which meant that he played every morning of his primary school life (unless it was pouring with rain) until the age of 14. However, as a twist to the story, he also took a liking to playing the side drum and he then became the chief drummer.

His father, who had a baritone voice and sang in one of the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) vocal quartets, recognised that young Vernon was showing talent on the fife so he went into the specialist music shop to get advice on where to progress. The shop assistant sold him a “boy’s flute” which was actually a wooden fife with four keys (sometimes referred to as the B♭ school flute) and also offered to teach him. However, after a few lessons being taught by numbers, (“Mary had a little lamb” was 4565444-555-422-etc), and then this teacher not turning up for lessons, it became obvious that a better solution had to be found.

Vernon’s father was a business manager, and expected everything to be done correctly and efficiently so he went “straight to the top” and contacted the Principal Flute of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra – James Carson. Proper serious weekly flute lessons began with Mr. Carson when Vernon was about 8 or 9 and he became the neighbourhood alarm clock every morning at 6.30am until 7, and again from 5.30pm until 6. This continued on weekdays for his entire school life.

Until his voice broke, Vernon also was a boy soprano soloist, performing regularly with the Brisbane Eisteddfod Junior choir, conducted by Alan Moxey[2]. This choir gave regular concerts in the Brisbane City Hall, the large main concert hall in Brisbane, in addition to quite extensive touring through Australia to Ballarat, Sydney, Grafton and also a concert tour through New Zealand. In every concert, Vernon would perform solo pieces on the flute, in addition to choral singing, and solos or duets, or playing flute obbligatos to other young sopranos (Lo Hear the Gentle Lark etc). Hence, performing to large audiences became normal to him and he loved being on stage.

Personal

Vernon Hill has been married three times and has five sons - David, Peter[3], Jeremy[4], Daniel[5] and Dominic.

His first wife was Judith Wedmaier, a fellow chorister in the Brisbane Eisteddfod Junior Choir. They had two sons, David and Peter. David tragically died in 2013 at age 43 of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) also known as ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Peter is an award winning champion Gymnast who works as a stunt man on major films. Most recently he received awards for his work on the Mad Max movie, Fury Road, at the Taurus Awards 2016 (the “Stunt” equivalent of the “Logies”) in Los Angeles.[6]

Vernon’s second wife was Anna de Borah (nee Cukier) and they had two sons, Jeremy and Daniel.

Jeremy has worked as a DJ (Jeremy Joshua) in many parts of the world and now has a studio in Sydney where he writes electronic music for the Dance Charts and helps other budding musicians to get their compositions recorded.[7] Daniel de Borah is a concert pianist who studied from an early age in Budapest, then in St Petersburg and London. He is now a Senior Lecturer in Piano at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University and the pianist in the Australian Piano Quartet[8], in addition to many other regular solo and Chamber Music recitals.[9]

Since the mid 1980s, Virginia Taylor has been Vernon’s partner, and they married in 1990. They have one son, Dominic who plays cello, and is a qualified Pilot.

Virginia Taylor is Head of Flute - Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM)[10] and Senior Lecturer in Flute at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. She is a Concerto Soloist[11] and has developed a reputation as a flute professor[12], having taught many of the prize winning flute players in Australia over the past ten years or more.
