释义 | VICTOR MANUEL TORRES' S life and accomplishments have been immortalized in the full-length documentary film, [1]"The Victor Movie" in 2014. Brandon Wilkerson, a grandson of David Wilkerson, produced the film in both English and Spanish. This biographical depiction of the transformation of an addict and gang member is filled with hope. The movie shows how the study of the Bible can be an extremely effective alternative in the opioid dilemma in this country. This hard-hitting movie has also been adopted by the [2]Latin Ballet in Richmond, Virginia into a beautifully choreographed ballet. Victor Torres is a man who has been raised from the depth of despair and hopelessness to a man with a legacy of helping thousands of men and women crippled by their addictions. His experience in the gang life, along with being addicted to heroin himself, has catapulted him on the scene of the opioid problem this nation is currently facing. Victor is an author who has written [3]Son of Evil Street, and his newly released, [4]"Reaching Your Addicted Loved One," a solution based book with answers for those dealing with their addicted loved ones. Some of Torres’ older publications are, (5)Why You Need the Holy Spirit published in 1990 and (6)Discovering Your Ministry in 1992. He and his wife, Carmen have founded [7]New Life for Youth, a year-long Christian-based training center for people with addictions. Torres’ tumultuous teenage years, have given rise to over 50 years of ministry to those hurting and adrift in the dark world of addiction. Torres began his Christian journey with the help of David Wilkerson, founder of Teen Challenge and Nicky Cruz, author of Run Baby Run. He had the privilege to work alongside them at the beginning of his walk to destiny. Victor’s testimony is so compelling, [8]Joel Osteen of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas made reference to it in his book,(9)Break Out. EARLY YEARS Pastor Torres was born in Puerto Rico in 1943. In the early ’60s, the Torres family left Puerto Rico searching for a better life only to wind up in the cesspool of Brooklyn, NY known as Brownsville. It turned out that the grass was not greener on the other side and the family suffered. Victor felt compelled to step in and help the family by finding a job. Unfortunately, he also became embroiled in the gang environment which ultimately led to heavy drug use, a life of crime, and several visits to rehabs and jail. At twelve, he stabbed a young man and this led to a crime-filled life which almost killed him. There were gun battles and heavy drug use which led his mother to pray fervently for her son. In fact, that dedication to petitioning God for her son’s deliverance did not go unanswered. It was those prayers that helped lead Victor to find help at Teen Challenge and through the ministry of David Wilkerson, founder of Teen Challenge, and Nicky Cruz, Victor began the journey God had laid out for him. His salvation was only the beginning and his transformation brought Victor to the [10] Latin American Bible Institute in La Puente, California.where he met and married his wife Carmen. Together they traversed over 40 countries spreading the Gospel of Hope in Jesus Christ. Victor has always been ready to bring his message to the inner city streets as well as universities and other ministries. MINISTRY Victor’s checkered past included leading the [11]Brooklyn Roman Lords, a gang known throughout New York City. Through years of hard work and dedication, he has built a successful program helping those with addictions known as New Life for Youth. Victor Torres is now an evangelist and pastor serving the community in Richmond, Virginia. His goal is to help as many as is possible to lead productive lives with hope for their future. Thousands have already gone through the program Victor and his wife Carmen founded. Victor believes that everyone can be helped and that Jesus is the answer. (12)"My story is proof that no matter what the circumstances are, no matter how you feel or how negative it looks, redemption is possible, I want people to know that whatever you're facing, whether it's drugs or any other kind of addiction, nothing's too hard or difficult for God." In 1971, Torres spoke at a church in Richmond, Virginia. Although his intentions were to leave Richmond, God had other plans and Victor and his family have remained in Richmond ever since. New Life for Youth has purchased homes in Richmond and a 118-acre farm in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Victor’s goal is to help all those who are looking for a better life and has shared, “The qualification for the program is they have to want help, There are no bars. It’s voluntary. Everyone is there because they want to be there.” As the young men and women became transformed, Victor and Carmen would bring them to different churches throughout Richmond. Unfortunately, the church at the time was not ready for these young people, many of whom did not look like the “typical” churchgoer. With the realization that these young people needed a place to worship in freedom, in 1979, he and Carmen founded [13]New Life Outreach International Church. This church serves a multi-cultural community in North Chesterfield, Virginia. New Life for Youth currently has women’s homes called The Mercy House in Richmond and Mercy Moms House in Chesterfield and Men’s homes in Chesterfield and Richmond also. The church has 1,000 congregants and operates a thrift store, car wash, and food pantry.
