Václav K. Killer (1960, Prague, Czech Republic) is a Czech painter and member of the Czech Journalists´ Syndicate. In 1983 he started as graphic editor in various periodicals and has been a journalist and an artist ever since. During the course of study lead by professor Jaroslav Hořánek he finished his education in arts in 1983. Since then his illustrations, drawings and typographies have been published in numerous books and magazines. Gradually his interest in the sea and ships has become characteristic of his work. It was a natural return back to his childhood when he was fond of ships and the sea. In his work he prefers the beautiful age of sail since Columbus’ era (e.g. painting titled The Ships of Christopher Columbus 2nd variation) until the mid-19th century. Great deal of inspiration for his work can also be found in the almost forgotten history of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, that he is constantly exploring (e.g. Velké prádlo/Big Laundry/SMS Velebit). In addition to ships he also creates paintings of dreamy landscapes where the sea is also of great prominence. For his work he uses the classical method of oil on canvas. The paintings aren’t just mere depictions of a particular ship, instead the ships are always depicted in a context typical for them (e.g. 13. ledna 1979/13 January 1979).
