Water.io is an Israel-based startup, Internet of Packaging company, and creator of smart caps for commercial products.[1]

History

Water.io was founded in 2015 by Kobi Bentkovski, Yoav Hoshen, and Nimrod Kaplan, a former tech executive.[1] Prior to cofounding Water.io, Bentkovski and Hoshen served together in Israeli intelligence Unit 8200.[1]

Bentkovski was inspired to start Water.io after his daughter contracted an infection that cleared up from drinking more water.[1]

Products

Water.io produces a plastic cap with a built-in sensor that measures the volume of the container's content.[1] The cap transmits the info via Bluetooth to a smartphone app and later direct the information to the manufacturer.[1][2] The manufacturers analyze the data and are able to communicate with the consumer about replacements, supplemental products, or subscriptions for continuous delivery.[1]

In January 2018, Mey Eden, a bottler of mineral water in Israel, put the Water.io cap on several hundred-thousand six-packs and sold out in less than half the expected time.[1] Packs with the caps sold 60% more than those without.[1]

Reminder is a patented Internet of Things smart cap that is sold B2B2C.[2] The cap vibrates, blinks, or sets off alarms based on reminders set by users.[2] Reminders are adjusted every time the bottle is used to avoid extraneous or repeat alerts.[2]Connected is another smart cap with reminders that can be adjusted according to user gender, weight, age, activity level, and weather.[2]

Companies can analyze both usage and location data from the caps to send users coupons or sales notices, give loyalty points, or offer recommendations for more effective uses of their products.[2] Personal identity info is not collected.[2]

The caps are manufactured in Asia, and both software and analysis is done at Water.io’s Rehovot Science Park offices.[2]

Partners

Water.io partnered with Visy to supply smart caps for containers in the Australian and New Zealand markets.[3]

The company partnered with Danone to develop the Coach2O cap for its Font Vella natural mineral water.[4] The cap tracks users' water intake and makes corresponding hydration recommendations.[5]
