He operates a personal sculpture park in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, where he also lives and works.[1] At the age of 79, Dayton had a piece—a 1968 stainless steel work entitled Crescent—acquired by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) for its permanent collection[2], and at 80 had a six-decade, 58-piece survey of his work fill both floors and the sculpture garden of the Blum & Poe gallery in Los Angeles.[3][4][5] He is father of entrepreneur Sky Dayton.[6][7]

Early life and work

Dayton was born in Spokane, Washington, in 1938. He had some early interest in drawing and painting, though he thought his career would be as a sign painter. A book on the painter Paul Gauguin inspired Dayton to pursue a career as an artist. He went to Indiana University to study art, and after receiving his B.F.A. in 1960, Dayton hitchhiked to New York City, where he would live for 12 years. Though Dayton was not directly affiliated with any of the dominant movements in the New York City art world at the time—such as Abstract Expressionism and Pop—he met and worked with many of those artists and was friendly with sculptors of the Park Place Group, including Robert Grosvenor and Mark di Suvero. Dayton initially worked to achieve success as a figurative painter, but American sculptor Alexander Calder, Swiss painter and sculptor Jean Tinguely, and the artist Jasper Johns all influenced Dayton's transition to assemblage and sculpture, as well as his early work with salvaged, junkyard materials like steel drums and tin cans. Dayton said that he felt that his "most exciting stuff" was made from what he was "getting off the street," such as his very first work, a tree trunk with a bedspring in it.[8][9][10]

Los Angeles

Dayton left New York for Los Angeles in 1972, settling in the Silver Lake area of the city. He worked as a carpenter to support his family as he pursued his art, without much commercial success. In the New York Times, Dayton reflected on the challenges of this period: “There was a lot of disappointment along the line, not getting into a gallery and stuff. But I knew what I wanted to do, so I just kept going.”

In 1999, Dayton moved to a home on a two-acre plot in a rural part of LA's San Fernando Valley, which gave him the space to pursue more large-scale sculptural works. The home was purchased for him by his son, Sky Dayton, who was founder and chairman of the Internet service provider EarthLink.[11][12] It is there that Dayton has exhibited his works, when they were not picked up by galleries, in his self-made, two-acre sculpture park that's been said to be reminiscent of the ranch of artist Jirayr Zorthian.[13] While Dayton continues to incorporate a variety of materials in his sculptures, his later work has tended to to focus on large-scale pieces in stainless steel.

Dayton's late-in-life break came after art collector and former co-founder of Creative Artists Agency (CAA) visited his studio. Ovitz recommended Dayton's work to Blum & Poe gallery co-founder Tim Blum and LACMA director Michael Govan. Soon after, LACMA acquired Dayton's 1968 stainless steel sculpture, Crescent, for the museum's permanent collection, and Blum & Poe mounted a well-received full-gallery career retrospective of Dayton's work, showcasing 58 pieces spanning 1964–2018.[14][15][16][17][18]
