释义 |
Early rifle competition between schools of the Big Ten Conference was mostly limited to postal matches. During the 1920’s Russell Wiles of Illinois became interested in promoting shooting within the Big Ten and to encourage the sport, he presented theWiles Trophy to the conference for presentation to the highest scoring team at a conference championship. About 1930 Dr. Emmet O. Swanson of Minnesota presented the Swanson Trophy, which was designed to be presented to the team with the high aggregate score in the preliminary (postal) matches. Both of these individuals were well known in the shooting community, and from their interest, the conference and sport has grown as we know it today. During the late 1970’s and early 1980’s because of numbers problems at member institutions, many schools in the Big Ten were no longer able to compete. With only three or four teams remaining it was decided by the Board to allow other non Big Ten teams to join the conference. In 1985, Mr. William T. Ranta from Lake Superior State College, presented the Ranta Trophy to the conference to be awarded to the over all winning team in air rifle. In 1989, Mr. Mark Bernarde of the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh presented the Bernarde Trophy to the conference to be awarded to the highest scoring air rifle team in the championship match. Beginning in 1992, the Ranta Trophy will be presented to the highest scoring air rifle team in the postal matches. The conference is currently composed of eleven teams from the Midwest and East Coast. Member schools include Clemson University, Georgia Military College, Georgia Military College ROTC, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, Michigan Technical University, North Dakota State University, Purdue University, University of Akron, University of Michigan, and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
