William PunshonWilliam Punshon (1802 - 1874) was a publican in Hobart who build and ran the 'Gray's Inn Tavern' in 1835.[1][2][3]LifeWilliam Punshon was born in 1802 to Thomas Punshon and Jane Heighington[4]. In 1831 he married his first wife, Ann Grant[5], who later died due to complications wit her liver on the 16th of September, 1839[6]. During that time, William Punshon build the Gray's Inn Tavern in 1835, which was a public house on Argyle's Street in the city of Hobart, Tasmania[2][7][1]. Following the death of his wife, William married another woman named Wilhelmina de Roocke on the 25th of February, 1840[8][3]. In 1843, William opened a second Gray's Inn Tavern on the corner of Elizabeth and Warwick street and added a small brewery to the establishment[2][1][7]. He started having financial difficulties and was put into debtor's prison[1][2] where he suffered a mental break and was moved to New Norfolk Asylum, a Hospital for the Insane[2]. He spent 20 years[2][1] in the asylum before dying of a liver disease on September 5th, 1874[9].
