WinTechCon is a conference in India that was initiated in 2018. The conference is organized by.[1] in cooperation with IEEE Bangalore Section [2] and IEEE WiE Council, Bangalore [3] Background and HistoryDiversity is a much discussed issue in engineering. WinTechCon (Women in Technology Conference) was created with the thought that India should lead the way when it comes to [4] in engineering. India has a growing base of women engineers, both in academia and corporate world. The good news is that based on a recent directive of the Ministry of HRD, more than 30 premier educational institutions including IITs and NITs will admit more women in their programs. In fact, these institutions have been directed to admit at least 14% women students. Yet, there is much work to be done in improving the diversity in the corporate sector. It is encouraging to see that leading companies, education and other public institutions are working to promote women technology talent. WinTechCon-2018 will provide opportunity to women technologists to showcase their work in an external forum through paper presentations, poster presentations, project demonstrations and tutorials. The conference will insist that all the speakers are women, while coauthors may be of either gender. A blog [5] explains the thought process behind WinTechCon. WinTechCon 2018The first edition of WinTechCon was held on Sep 28, 2018. The logo of the conference shows a woman technologist. The conference received financial sponsorship from several companies in India, including Texas Instruments India, Qualcomm India, Samsung India, Analog Devices India, Intel India, Cadence India and Boeing, India. The Call for Papers for the event attracted more than 100 papers and more than 10 demo proposals. Through a rigorous review process, the review committee selected 12 regular papers and 4 demo proposals. They also selected 12 papers for poster presentation. The technical program of the conference [6] includes two keynote talks. Shalini Kapoor (IBM India) and Susmita Sur-Kolay (ISI Kolkata) are the keynote speakers at the conference. Two embedded tutorials and one invited talk on 5G communication are included in the technical program. WinTechCon 2019 is also planned in Bangalore, India. The conference is expected to see a participation of 250 delegates. Of these, a majority will be industry professionals. There will also engineering faculty and students among the audience. The conference has instituted a program to offer around 50 complimentary registrations to participants from the academia. |
