It has been around for a little over 100 years. Wrestling was done as a form of entertainment which was found at entertainment locations such as carnivals. Most of these performances were done by college wrestlers who needed money. Over the course of time, wrestling in the United States became as popular as boxing and baseball during the 20th century.[2] By the late 1950s, wrestling became more of a show than an athletic competition. This was due to someone named Antonio Rocco and Gorgeous George who fascinated the crowd due to their impressive holds and acrobatic maneuvers. Both these wrestlers brought attraction to wrestling. [3] Towards the turn of the 20th century, wrestling started to draw away more people from boxing and becoming more popular. While it was never confirmed, the boxing commission started to spread that “wrestling was in the fix”. This caused many fans to turn on wrestling and lost a lot of viewers.[2] Eventually wrestling became an entertainment show due to the loss of viewership.College Wrestling{{main article|History of collegiate wrestling}}OlympicsThe United States is a powerhouse at Olympic wrestling. [4][5][6] Freestyle wrestling was introduced in 1904 and was only disputed by American wrestlers. Free style wrestling had far less history and tradition compared to Greco-Roman but possessed great popularity and developed into a form of entertainment which was performed at fairs and festivals across the United States.[7] In the Olympics, the English and Americans largely dominated in freestyle wrestling. In the Olympics games at the year 2000, taken place in Sydney, American wrestler Rulon Gardner beat three-time champion Alexandre Karolin to take home the Gold.[8] USA wrestling is the national governing for wrestling in the United States. It is also the representative to the UWW (United World Wrestling) which is the international federation for wrestling and the USOC (United States Olympic Committee). USA wrestling consists of over 233,000 members which includes numerous age ranges, coaches, and officials. It is divided into State Associations where each state has its own set of bylaws for which it operates. USA wrestling is accountable for the assortment of contestants to represent the United States in the Olympic and World competitions.[9]References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=KUsJAwAAQBAJ&pg=PA309&lpg=PA309&dq=history+of+amateur+wrestling+in+the+united+states&source=bl&ots=mQIZNr6GlU&sig=ACfU3U0281pgLMIVINLbj9krJchbMJnwEw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiMqZPKuvrgAhVrUxUIHQdiDl44ChDoATAFegQICRAB#v=onepage&q=history+of+amateur+wrestling+in+the+united+states&f=false|title=Historical Dictionary of Wrestling|first=John|last=Grasso|date=6 March 2014|publisher=Scarecrow Press|accessdate=11 March 2019|via=Google Books}} {{Sports in the United States}}{{US-sport-stub}}2. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://bleacherreport.com/articles/433611-the-history-of-pro-wrestling-in-the-us-part-1|title=The History of Pro Wrestling In The U.S (Part 1)|last=Hester|first=Matthew|website=Bleacher Report|language=en|access-date=2019-03-26}} 3. ^{{Cite web|url=https://bleacherreport.com/articles/436373-the-history-of-pro-wrestling-in-the-us-part-2|title=The History Of Pro Wrestling In The U.S (part 2)|last=Hester|first=Matthew|website=Bleacher Report|language=en|access-date=2019-03-26}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2012/8/13/3238285/martial-chronicles-olympics-history-catch-wrestling|title=The Olympic History of Catch Wrestling|first=John S.|last=Nash|date=13 August 2012|website=Bloody Elbow|accessdate=11 March 2019}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2017/05/02/wwe-olympic-wrestling-ncaa-kurt-angle-brock-lesnar-chad-gable-jason-jordan/100825750/|title=From mat to ring, WWE's amateur and pro wrestling connection|website=USA TODAY|accessdate=11 March 2019}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.complex.com/sports/2016/12/why-1996-most-influential-year-in-wrestling-history|title=Why 1996 Was the Most Important Year in Wrestling History|website=Complex|accessdate=11 March 2019}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.olympic.org/wrestling-freestyle-equipment-and-history|title=Wrestling freestyle: Equipment and History - Olympic Sport History|date=2018-05-15|website=International Olympic Committee|language=en|access-date=2019-03-26}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=https://unitedworldwrestling.org/organisation/history-wrestling|title=History of Wrestling {{!}} United World Wrestling|website=unitedworldwrestling.org|access-date=2019-03-26}} 9. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.teamusa.org:443/USA-Wrestling/Team-USA|title=Team USA|website=Team USA|language=en|access-date=2019-03-26}} 2 : Sports in the United States by sport|Wrestling in the United States |
