Yemin (Korean a singer-songwriter) received his first musical experience when he was five years old as a Presbyterian Church choir member, and his curiosity about nature also developed around this time. Nature and religion continue to play an important role in his life and music. Audiences who carefully listen to his music can feel elements of nature such as a wild flower, the flowing waters of a brook in a mountain valley, and the purity of the sounds of children. Yemin started a musical career as he appeared in a television program titled "MBC University Song Festival" in 1986, and he won the Finalist for composition and silver prize in 1998.; MBC is a major television broadcasting company in Korea. After serving in the army from 1987 to 1989, he started to write and produce popular songs for other singers. Many new singers made their debut appearances with his songs, and some have gone on to become famous in Korea. Yemin released the first his album in 1991, the second album in 1992 and those sold more than half a million copies. The title song "A Mountain Boy's Love Story" became the inspiration for his recent concert tour for children. The songs and music have been used for numerous films, TV dramas, and TV commercials. The strong point of the music is the combined relationship between his voice, which has a melancholy emotion, and a meditative melody. Yemin's musical career continued to flourish, and at the peak of musical success, he decided to go the USA in 1993 to further pursue musical academics. Yemin studied under professors Janice Giteck at the Cornish College of the Arts majoring in new music composition. Shortly after returning to Korea in 1997, he released the third album titled "Nostalgia." The musical ideas and sounds of "Nostalgia" were based on mediaeval music. Nostalgia and his subsequent works were more expansive and expressive incorporating new elements of music. After staying in Korea for a year, Yemin returned to the Cornish College and became interested in ethnomusicology. Fundamental issues such as the universe, nature and human beings have been prevailing themes in his musical philosophy, and these ideas drew him into the study of ethnomusicology. He has focused not only on musical structures and sounds but also the meaning and influence of music for human beings. He was especially interested in when a person first recognizes a tool to be a musical tool or considers sounds to be music. Yemin collected songs that children sing while playing, from around to world, especially from developing nations. He has begun to incorporate various ideas and elements from these songs into his music. During the three years of study, he discovered his world which led to the release of the fourth album called "My Tree" in 2001. "My Tree" reflects his passion for world folk music. Yemin created and hosted a new radio program from 2000 to 2002 called "World Music Journey with Yemin" which was broadcasted on BBS-FM. The program was given the gold prize in 2000 by the Korea Broadcast Award. During this time he began to plan a concert tour for children, primarily from the broken families, in the nation's branch elementary schools. This concert tour, titled "The Hill of Dreams" is one of the most distinguished achievements in his musical journey. Since 2001, he has donated his time to give more than 180 concerts and traveled more than 70,000 miles in the process. Using his own funds, he visited remote villages in mountainous regions and islands, far from any cultural centers, to meet students and to give a show full of hopes and dreams. Yemin gave priority to schools with smaller numbers of students, and once held a concert at a school with one student and one teacher. As the activities had become more known to the public, individuals and institutions had extended their hands by providing gifts, confectioneries and financial support for children in remote elementary schools. Yemin's music continues to inspire both adults and children. He work for a quality of innocence that cleanses the mind and renews the spirit. Yemin's music evokes thoughts of peace, hope, love and dreams. References |
