Yoga as TherapyYoga practices have been considered a means of transcending worldly entanglements and suffering, but also of maintaining the physical, metal, and energetic bodies at optimal levels of function. [1] Yoga chikitsa is Sanskrit for yoga therapy, which historical yogis used in pursuit of spiritual freedom and the ailments that would hinder progress toward it.[2] In the 19th and 20th centuries, yoga practices of all kinds were increasingly opened to non-Brahmins and laypeople, or "householders," including women,[3]and yoga's history as a health-promoting philosophy is the underpinning for its use today as a widely accessible therapeutic modality. Contemporary yoga therapy uses yogic tools and practices as a means of restoring or maintaining health in the body-mind system.[4]All yoga presumably has therapeutic potential, but general yoga practice differs from specifically applied yoga therapy: "for those with rather serious problems, [yoga therapy] can function as a ‘life raft’ in the process of getting out of troubled waters. But Yoga therapy is only a preparation for the true intention of Yoga, which is to function as a ‘launch pad’ to new possibilities of personal evolution..[5] Health BenefitsThe practice of yoga therapy is supported by research from peer-reviewed publications such as Yoga Mimamsa [6] and the International Journal of Yoga Therapy [7]. Yoga's utility as a therapeutic practice relates to its effects on the interdependent human biopsychosocial-spiritual system [8], including its specific ability to promote self-regulation [9]. Designing clinical trials that appropriately encompass the holistic nature of a practice originally intended to engender transformation is inherently challenging, and research has tended to focus on isolated practices rather than individualized yoga therapy and on discrete effects such as inflammatory markers [10][11] or measures of strength, flexibility, or balance[12]. Yoga Therapy as a ProfessionRichard Miller, PhD, and Larry Payne, PhD, founded the International Association of Yoga Therapists [13] (IAYT) in 1989. Other yoga therapy associations include the Asian Yoga Therapy Association [14], Australasian Association of Yoga Therapists [15], British Council for Yoga Therapy [16], and Japan Yoga Therapy Society [17]. These associations set voluntary standards for yoga therapist training, which generally begins with 800 hours (and 2 years) beyond a basic (200-hour) yoga teacher training and can include graduate- and postgraduate-level degree programs. Yoga therapy, which may be practiced in healthcare settings, can take place individually or in small groups of people with similar concerns or conditions. Settings where yoga therapy services are provided range from private stand-alone practices to integrated allopathic clinics [18][19] and dedicated yoga/Ayurveda facilities [20]. The U.S. military employs yoga and meditation techniques therapeutically [21] References1. ^{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=4O6_AwAAQBAJ&dq=feuerstein&source=gbs_navlinks_s|title=Tantra: Path of Ecstasy|last=Ph.D|first=Georg Feuerstein|date=1998-07-28|publisher=Shambhala Publications|isbn=9780834825451}} 2. ^{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=pRDoswEACAAJ&dq=yoga+beneath+surface&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiJs5HfqcPfAhUro1kKHfHuDJkQ6AEIKjAA|title=Yoga Beneath the Surface: An American Student and His Indian Teacher Discuss Yoga Philosophy and Practice|last=Ramaswami|first=Srivatsa|last2=Hurwitz|first2=David|date=2006-06-22|publisher=Hachette Books|isbn=9781569242940}} 3. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.yogajournal.com/yoga-101/yogas-trip-america|title=The Timeline and History of Yoga in America|last=Hammond|first=Holly|website=Yoga Journal|access-date=2019-01-14}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url=https://cdn.ymaws.com/www.iayt.org/resource/resmgr/docs_articles/iaytdef_yogatherapy_ed_stand.pdf>|title=Educational Standards for the Training of Yoga Therapists: Definition of Yoga Therapy|last=International Association of Yoga Therapists|first=|date=2012|website=|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} 5. ^{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=m-rYsUKdskcC&printsec=frontcover&dq=yoga+for+wellness&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj425ab-8LfAhWxxFkKHW_NCZIQ6AEIKjAA#v=onepage&q=yoga%20for%20wellness&f=false|title=Yoga for Wellness: Healing with the Timeless Teachings of Viniyoga|last=Kraftsow|first=Gary|date=1999|publisher=Penguin|isbn=9780140195699}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.ym-kdham.in/|title=Yoga Mimamsa|date=2014|website=www.ym-kdham.in|access-date=2019-01-14}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.iayt.org/page/IJYTCurrent|title=IJYT - Current Issue - International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT)|website=www.iayt.org|access-date=2019-01-14}} 8. ^{{Cite journal|last=Porges|first=Stephen W.|last2=Noggle Taylor|first2=Jessica|last3=Moonaz|first3=Steffany|last4=Schmalzl|first4=Laura|last5=Erb|first5=Matt|last6=Sullivan|first6=Marlysa B.|date=2018|title=Yoga Therapy and Polyvagal Theory: The Convergence of Traditional Wisdom and Contemporary Neuroscience for Self-Regulation and Resilience|url=https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2018.00067/full|journal=Frontiers in Human Neuroscience|language=English|volume=12|doi=10.3389/fnhum.2018.00067|issn=1662-5161}} 9. ^{{Cite journal|last=Wilson|first=Angela|last2=Vago|first2=David R.|last3=Park|first3=Crystal L.|last4=Noggle|first4=Jessica J.|last5=Gard|first5=Tim|date=2014|title=Potential self-regulatory mechanisms of yoga for psychological health|url=https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2014.00770/full|journal=Frontiers in Human Neuroscience|language=English|volume=8|doi=10.3389/fnhum.2014.00770|issn=1662-5161}} 10. ^{{Cite journal|last=Pascoe|first=Michaela C.|last2=Thompson|first2=David R.|last3=Ski|first3=Chantal F.|date=December 2017|title=Yoga, mindfulness-based stress reduction and stress-related physiological measures: A meta-analysis|url=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28963884|journal=Psychoneuroendocrinology|volume=86|pages=152–168|doi=10.1016/j.psyneuen.2017.08.008|issn=1873-3360|pmid=28963884}} 11. ^{{Cite journal|last=Peters|first=M.
