Yoshihiko Kawauchi (川内美彦) is a Japanese architect, a professor of Toyo University.[1], an international expert of universal design, and an legal advocacy for people with disabilities in Japan.[2] Early Life and EducationHe was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1953. He spent his childhood in a rural area[2]. He entered a technical college instead of a regular university after he graduated his high school because of the student movements in Japanese universities during 1960s.[2] He entered a judo club in the college but injured his neck during a competition in April 30th, 1973[2]. He became disabled and started to use a wheelchair since then. He passed the first-grade architect test in 1982[3]. He received his PhD from the Graduate School of Engineering, Yokohama National University.[1]He obtained financial support to study the independent living movement and access in the United States in 1989 and 1990.[2] During his stay in Berkeley, California, he attended a class about accessible design in University of California, Berkeley[2]. He met Ronald Mace in Berkeley and learned the idea of universal design.[2] CareerAfter he went back to Japan, he founded Legal Advocacy for the Defense of People and Disabilities (LADD) in 1995[2]. He published a book on universal design, The Universal Design - A Reconsideration of Barrier Free (ユニバーサル・デザイン−バリアフリーへの問いかけ) in 2001. He became a professor of Undergraduate School of Human Life Design, Toyo University since 2008[3].
