Yukinoshita Yukino is the main protagonist and title character of Watari Wataru^[1]'s light novel series My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected. For all Japanese-language productions of the anime, Yukino is voiced by Saori Hayami.

Creation and conception

"Yukino" is based on the place name of Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, formerly known as "雪ノ下"; "Yukino" is also a place name in Japan. Part of her name "Yuki" in Japanese means "snow" probably in reference to her cold personality. The origin of the word“Yukino" is casual, because Yukino was born when it snowed. Her full name“Yukinoshita Yukino" literally translates into the snow beneath the snow.

Character

Yukinoshita Yukino is the student of Class 2J of Sobu High School and also the president of the school's Service Club^[2]. She is a perfectionist, who has excellent results in learning and other aspects, so she often is envied by her peers, but because of their own personality led to no friends. Personality is not good for interpersonal communication. Although its appearance is cold and strict, she also has a gentle side. After encountering Hachiman Hikigaya^[3] and Yui Yuigahama^[4], the inner feelings of her characters is also slowly beginning to change in the relationship with them.^[5]

Personality

Yukino is smart, beautiful, and comes from a wealthy family, but she has a tendency to be blunt and often points out faults in other people where normally it would be very hard to do so. She is a competitive person, willing to win any competition officially and unofficially to prove herself and refuses to lose. Yukino always has a cold poker face. But in front of the cats and the doll of Pan-san^[6], she will be very lovable. She is fond of cats and anything cat-related and her obsession for Pan-san is known by both Yui and Hachiman. Yukino is almost always attracted to spots were Pan-san is displayed. Ever since she came into contact with Yui and Hachiman, Yukino's frozen heart seems to melt gradually, and there are many more smiles in peacetime.

Appearance

Her beauty is like her name. Yukino is a beautiful girl with waist-length black hair which is tied with two red ribbons by each shoulder and angular blue eyes. Yukino's hairstyles are mostly medium-long hair with sloping bangs. When she goes out, she will occasionally change her hairstyle with the change of clothes, such as twin tails, single tails and so on. Yukino is mostly seen wearing her school uniform, which consists of a black blazer with a white shirt underneath it, a red ribbon tie, a plaid skirt and black stockings up to her knees.^[5]

Abilities

Yukino is good at sports but has no confidence in her stamina.^[7] She is good at cooking and is capable of teaching others cooking.^[8] Yukino is also good in musical instrument and capable of singing in front of a crowd which she normally hates to stand in front of. In Volume 6 Yukino was shown to play a base and singing.^[9]

Reception

Yukino Yukinoshita has won an award as Best Female Character Award at the 2015 NewType Awards held in Japan October on 10, 2015.^[10]
