Yvonne Meier (born June 6, 1955) is a Swiss-born American choreographer whose work is acclaimed for its “chaotic sensuality.[1]” and “agile imagination and breathtaking defiance of convention[2].”  Her work often prominently features props and costumes. She is also a teacher, and her dance classes draw from Skinner Releasing Technique, Authentic Movement, and her own signature improvisatory technique, which she calls “Scores.”[3] Meier has been a central figure in New York’s downtown dance scene since the 1980s.

Biography

Originally from Zürich, Switzerland, Meier moved to New York in 1979 to study with Merce Cunningham[4], where she discovered Release technique and began working with a group of dance and performance artists who were teaching classes and making work at Performance Space 122. At PS122 she met Ishmael Houston-Jones and Jennifer Monson, artists who would become long-time collaborators and peers. She also created a number of improvisation-based experimental dances that she toured in New York, Switzerland, and elsewhere. She is a renowned teacher and practitioner of improvisation, and has developed her own improvisatory technique, which she calls “Scores.”

In the late 1980s and early ‘90s, Meier began to marry the Skinner Releasing Technique and Authentic Movement, which comprised the core of her choreographic practice, and performance art practices and techniques.[5] This resulted in some of her more iconic works including The Shining (1993/2011), in which audience members are led through a subterranean maze made of hundreds of cardboard refrigerator boxes[6], and Pommes-Fritz (1991,) in whichMeier and her collaborators set fire to a paper truck, smear honey into their hair, and pull down shelves filled with china, sending the dinnerware crashing to the floor.[7]

Meier’s work has received grants and awards from organizations including Pro Helvetia, the Franklin Furnace Fund, New York Foundation for the Arts, New York State Council for the Arts, Lambent Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Meier was awarded New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) Awards for The Shining, Stolen, and The Shining 3, a Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX) Performing Artist Award (2015), and she was honored at the 2012 Movement Research Gala.
