Zafar Sareshwala and Maulana Azad National Urdu UniversityThe Bridge Course and Course Accreditation

During his tenure in Maulana Azad National Urdu University he felt a need to introduce a Bridge-Course for the Madarsa-students which benefitted many students. These Madarsa students study for around eight to nine years and are capable of opting for, and studying any course of their choice- be it Engineering or B.Sc. or any other technical course. Their dilemma is that they don’t have a High-School or ten plus two certificate thus they are constrained to join certain courses only. That bridge course had enabled them for studying any course of their choice.

Zafar Sareshwala has pitched for the recognition of several Madarsa courses. Though those courses were equivalent to Bachelors and Master degrees, yet were unrecognized. Thus the pursuant never got eligible, neither for the mainstream university education nor for the government jobs. It was his initiative that helped many students in getting good jobs. While being the Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Sareshwala perceived the need for accreditation of several distance learning courses of the University and worked for that. The University had two non-functioning ITIs there at Darbhanga in Bihar and Mangalore in Karnataka. Zafar Sareshwala’s active efforts got these ITI centres approved from AICTE/UGC and opened new avenues of learning for students.

The Seminars and the Industrial Exposure for MANUU Students

Although Maulana Azad National Urdu University is a central university yet very minimal attention was paid towards campus placements, which was the basic cause of limited opportunities for the students. Sareshwla deliberately focused upon this issue and with his efforts this dream became a reality. He made the campus recruitment cells functional and invited many top companies to the University. This small step of his brought immense change in the lives of the students.

Along with that he arranged and organized industrial visits to several renowned companies like Reliance Industries Ltd, BSE, Exim Bank and RBI. It boosted the morale of the students and increased their confidence. Many seminars and workshops were also organized under his guidance to provide the students a platform to showcase their talents. The grooming of the students’ personality was also a focal point of those workshops.

In addition to these, he also took pains to cater to the competitive needs of the students. UPSC training classes were organized which resulted in many students qualifying for several competitive exams.

For instance, a two-day program on “Muslims, Media and Democracy” was organized in the year 2015. Among the guests were 50 prominent journalists and scholars.

Another remarkable program was related to “Holistic Education”, which was honoured by the graceful presence of Ms. Najam Heptulla, the Governor of Manipur.

One more workshop on “Education to Entrepreneurship” was organized in April 2018, where around 700 students, including 50 Madarsa pupils, from across 20 states participated. This program was organized in collaboration with the US Consulate.

There was many more, including a symposium on “Ideas and Funding Avenues of Ideas” in which IT Minister of Telangana was one of the dignitaries.

Controversies

Several times, many kinds of blames were laid at his door and numerous Fatwas were issued against him, but he did not pay any heed to them.

He remained in controversies for his association with Mr. Narendra Modi. During the riots of 2002 he was residing in England and there he had primed a case against the then chief-minister of Gujarat and also filed a petition against Mr. L.K. Advani.

Although, he was against him yet he met Mr. Narendra Modi. The meeting was in a way guided by some of the religious scholars. While some of the religious clerics forbade him from meeting Mr. Modi, the astronomy expert, Maulana Yaqoob Qasmi (a companion of Qazi Mualana Mujahid ul Islam) and Maulana Eesa Mansoori suggested meeting him. Referring to the Quran and Hadees they advised that all issues can be resolved only by meeting and discussion over it. Therefore, along with Maulana Eesa Mansoori, he met Mr. Modi in England and exchanged views regarding various issues.

Later on, however, his meeting with Mr. Narendra Modi changed his view point and he returned to his motherland with new hope and vigour. The agenda of the meeting was to settle the unrest among the Muslims in Gujarat. It was at a time, when things between Muslims and Narendra Modi were hotting up. The meeting went well and slowly and gradually the bonds between the two became stronger and Zafar Sareshwala was able to help those Muslims who were in Gujarat jails to come out. The restart was never easy; Sareshwala also struggled hard to reestablish his business while helping others.
