Zeist Music Days is an international chamber music festival in Zeist, The Netherlands, that lasts for 15 days and that is held each year in the second half of August. As of 2009 Alexander Pavlovsky, first violinist of the Jerusalem Quartet, is the artistic director. The festival focuses on concerts, held in the 18th-century church of the Moravian Church in Zeist, a fringe program and an extensive talent development program. Talent developmentThe talent development program consists of an extensive masterclass program, through the years given by renowned musicians like: members of the Daniël Quartet, Jerusalem Quartet, Schumann Quartet, Cuarteto Casals, Cuarteto Quiroga, Emerson String Quartet, Szymanowski Quartet, Borodin Quartet, Pavel Haas Quartet, Quatuor Ysaÿe, Vermeer Quartet, Zvi Maschkowski, Martin Lovett, Menahem Pressler, Orfeo Mandozzi, Valentin Erben, Robert Kulek, Marcin Sieniawski, Wu Qian, Marc Danel, Gilad Karni, Ella Pavlovsky, Eckart Heiligers, Michal Kanka, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Josef Kluson, Yigal Tuneh, Joel Krosnick, Avri Levitan. Knowingly, no contest is attached to the festival, thus enabling the masterclass students to fully focus on improving their skills. As part of the talent development program the students perform in venues throughout The Netherlands: Amerongen Castle, Loenersloot Castle, Hermitage Amsterdam and Gasthuiskapel Zaltbommel. As of the beginning of the festival more than 700 students participated in the masterclasses (up until 2018). As of 2010 Zeist Music Days also a adopts and coaches a youngsters quartet for a couple of years. After the Youngsters Corner Quartet (2010-2013) and the Gióvani Kwartet (2014-2016), a new quartet was formed in 2017: Young Strings Zeist. HistoryThe festival was founded at the Beauforthuis in Zeist in 1990 as the Daniël Music Days, named after the Daniël Quartet. Until 2008, the cellist of the Daniël Quartet, Zvi Maschkowski, was artistic director of the festival. The members of the Daniël Quartet gave concerts and teached at the masterclasses. As of 2000 more and more other ensembles participated at the festival, hence the name of the festival was altered in Zeist Music Days. EFFE-label for Zeist Music DaysIn 2015 Zeist Music Days was granted the EFFE-label as one of 'Europe's remarkable festivals'. This label is awarded by Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe (EFFE) to festivals that stand out through artistic quality, local involvement and international orientation. EFFE is an initiative of the European Festivals Association.
