He studied at Lugoj with Ion Vidu and Iosif Willer, at Cluj with Gheorghe Dima and Augustin Bena, and at Vienna, at Neues Wiener Konservatorium (1921-1926, 1930-1931) with Ernst Kanitz, with whom he studied counterpoint and composition.[1] After this, he starts writing in an atonal manner, namely after the principles promoted by the Second Viennese School (Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and Alban Berg), techniques that can be found, selectively, in his creation, whithout having had to renounce all romanian compositional traditions. While he was in Vienna he was the conductor of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. He taught counterpoint and music history at the Conservatory from Târgu Mureș (1935-1940 and1945-1948) and Timișoara (1940-1945). He was then general manager of the artistic education in Bucharest (1949-1950), professor at the Ciprian Porumbescu Conservatory in Bucharest (1952-1968), secretary (1949-1953) and then vice-president (1953-1977) of the Union of Composers and Musicologists from Romania, whose vicepresident he was from 1968. Then, he worked as chief editor at the Review Musica (1953-1964) between 1957 and 1964. He was laureate of the Gottfried von Herder Award of the University of Vienna (1974). MusicHe has written numerous musicologial studies, as well as two important volumes about the history of Romanian music in the 19-20th centuries.
