Zilliqa is an open-source, public blockchain platform for hosting decentralized applications. It features smart contract functionality through an intermediate-level scripting language called Scilla. Zilliqa is based on sharding-based techniques and aims to accommodate large number of concurrent transactions.^[1].

ZIL is the fundamental cryptocurrency for operation in the Zilliqa network. Currently, ZIL is a placeholder ERC-20 token until the production Zilliqa blockchain is launched. The total valuation of ZIL tokens, at its peak, was $1 billion USD^[2]^[3] in May 2018. Since then, it has fallen back to $200 million USD^[4] (as of January 2019).

History

The sharding technology employed by Zilliqa is founded upon the work of Computer Science researchers from National University of Singapore^[5]^[6].

Formal development of the Zilliqa platform has began through Zilliqa Research Pte. Ltd in 2016^[7]. The first testnet was launched in April 2018^[8]. The latest version of the testnet, codenamed Mao Shan Wang, was launched in November 2018^[9]. The mainnet is scheduled to launch in January 2019^[10]
