"Drake Would Love Me" is a song recorded by American singer K. Michelle for her second studio album, Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? (2014). It was released on December 2, 2014, streaming on VH1's website, and was made available with the rest of the album on December 9. An R&B ballad, the song is about a romance with Drake. Michelle wrote it from the perspective of the rapper's female fans, and received his approval before it was released. Music critics had varying opinions about the song's connection with the album's themes. "Drake Would Love Me" was well-received by critics, although some were more critical about Michelle's decision to dedicate a song to Drake.

Recording and release

Kimberly Michelle Pate,{{efn|K. Michelle is credited under her legal name, Kimberly Michelle Pate, on the album's liner notes.[1]}} Bianca Atterberry, Ronald "Flippa" Colson, Oak Felder, and Stephen Mostyn wrote "Drake Would Love Me",[1] and Felder, Colson, and Steve Ace produced the song.[1] The vocals were recorded by C. Travis Kr8ts (with assistance from Felder), and produced by Atterberry. Donnie Meadows and Tanisha Broadwater coordinated the production. Jaycen Joshua mixed the song with assistance from Maddox Chhim and Ryan Kaul, and it was mastered by David Kutch.[2]

Michelle had played the track for Drake to obtain his permission,[3][4] and he responded: "You’re crazy as shit, but it’s a great record."[4] She wrote "Drake Would Love Me" from his female fans' perspective, saying that she had only a platonic relationship with the rapper.[4] While discussing women's preference for Drake, Michelle said that they enjoyed his love songs over other male artists' more-vulgar material.[5]

On December 2, 2014, "Drake Would Love Me" was streamed on VH1's website[6] before being made available with the rest of Michelle's second studio album, Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?, a week later.[1] After she released the album's track listing on November 3, 2014,[7] music critics cited the song's title as a point of interest;[8][9][10] The New York Times' Jon Caramanica cited it as an example of clickbait.[11] Michelle uploaded "Drake Would Love Me" to her YouTube account on February 13, 2017,[12] as part of a Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? playlist.[13]

Composition and lyrics

"Drake Would Love Me" is a four-minute, 19-second R&B ballad.[1][14][15] MTV News' Rob Markman wrote that it opens with a "calming melody", with a piano, guitar, and violin instrumentation building over the course of the song.[6] Alfred Soto of Pitchfork identified "Drake Would Love Me" as a slow jam.[16] When describing Michelle's vocals, AllMusic's Andy Kellman said that she "emphasizes certain syllables like surgical knife twists".[1]

The song is about a romantic relationship between Michelle and Drake.[14] It opens with the lyrics: "I would be the apple of his eye and he would treat me like his grand prize ... trophy."[6] She then sings about attending the Grammy Awards, where she would be hated by the rapper's groupies.[14] She lists Drake's positive characteristics, including how he would "always be the same", and boasts that she would be the best sex he ever had.[15] The lyrics include references to the rapper's music,[15] such as: "Drake wouldn't leave me, he would keep me, never break his promises / I'd be the best he ever had, he'd be on his best behavior."[17][18] The chorus includes the line: "Drake would love me, he would kiss me, he would touch me like I need."[6]

Several media outlets cited "Drake Would Love Me" as fan fiction.[17][19][20] Time's Nolan Feeney compared Michelle's list of Drake's positive qualities with Dr. Seuss and Amanda Bynes' tweet that she wanted Drake to "murder [her] vagina".[15]{{efn|In March 2013, Amanda Bynes tweeted that she wanted Drake to "murder [her] vagina" and posted other messages about the rapper.[21]}} Critics had a variety of opinions on how the song connected with Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? as a whole.[5][20][22] Emily Laurence of Metro New York wrote that the song indicated that not everything on the album would be "intensely emotion-filled".[5] When reviewing the album's final three songs, The Quietus' Alex Macpherson described Michelle as "searching for a way to reconcile her need to love hard with the reality of the men she encountered". Macpherson said that she first turns to Frankenstein on "Build A Man" and later to fan fiction on "Drake Would Love Me" to explore this before accepting her faults on "God I Get It".[20] Ken Capobianco of The Boston Globe summed up the song as representing the "honesty, defiance, and sensuality" found throughout Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?.[22]

Critical reception

Critical response was largely positive. Jon Caramanica praised "Drake Would Love Me" as "great clickbait soul",[11] and Alfred Soto cited the song for its urgency and the best vocals of Michelle's career.[16] As part of his review of Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?, Ken Capobianco selected "Drake Would Love Me" as a highlight due to its "vulnerability and rubbed-raw tension rarely heard in R&B today".[22] Despite their initial apprehension about the song, the Star Tribune's A.D. Amorosi and Martín Caballero of USA Today reviewed it positively.[23][24] Amorosi wrote the title implied a "funny or cocky" approach, and praised Michelle for conveying "heartbreak at going unnoticed in the face of passion" instead.[23] Caballero commended the track as an "anthemic big-stadium R&B ballad".[24] Meggie Morris of Renowned for Sound wrote that "Drake Would Love Me" was "seriously stunning, but charmingly amusing".[25]

Other reviewers criticized the song's focus on Drake. Despite her positive review of the composition and Michelle's vocals, Kara Brown of Jezebel dismissed "Drake Would Love Me" as "the musical equivalent of trying to stop your friend from sending a third drunk text to that guy she kinda hooked up with a month ago".[17] The Washington Post's Chris Richards called it "mildly radioactive" to have a singer write and perform from a fan's point of view.[26] A writer for The Fader cited the song as the number-one instance in which R&B was "just plain weird" in 2014.[19] In his review of Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? for Complex, Michael Arceneaux wrote: "Given the artist in question, the ridiculous has to be represented."[27]
