He was involved in the political struggle against apartheid in the mid-1970s, when he served time in prison during which he completed his law degree.[3] Ntsebeza emerged as a commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1995.[4] Ntsebeza was appointed chancellor of the University of Fort Hare in January 2017.
