The Dunalastair Hotel is a hotel in Dunalastair, Kinloch Rannoch, Perthshire, originally established in 1788.^[1] The current building dates from 1862 and has seen numerous owners and refurbishments.

Location

The Hotel is on the East edge of Loch Rannoch, in the square of Kinloch Rannoch village.^[1]

History

Alexander Robertson and the Jacobite rising

The land on which the hotel is sited was originally owned by the Clan Donnachaidh. In 1745, the clan's then-chief, Alexander Robertson was defeated in battle during the Jacobite rising and all of the clan's land was sold to the crown, and only later restored to Robertson's ancestors in 1782, 33 years after his death.^[2]

Looking to resettle in the wake of their defeat at the Battle of Culloden, the few surviving soldiers began to develop a small community, today the village of Kinloch Rannoch.

In 1788 the soldiers built an inn at the entrance of this village. This eventually become the Dunalastair Hotel.^[3]

General Sir John Macdonald

By the 1860s, the Dunalastair Estate belonged to General Sir John Macdonald, who began to the develop the surrounding areas. This included the building, in 1862, of a mansion known as Dunalastair House,^[4] as well as the Episcopal Church in Kinloch Rannoch Square.

At this time that General Macdonald took ownership of the inn which had been built in 1788, and named it the Macdonald Arms Hotel.

20th Century

By the end of the Victorian era, the Macdonald Arms Hotel was firmly established in the area. It was also around this time that the name was changed to the Dunalastair Hotel.

The hotel continued to provide accommodation for visitors to the Scottish Highlands throughout the 20th century. During this period, ownership of the Dunalastair Hotel changed hands several times. In 1989, it was bought by John Edwards, who sold it to his son Paul in 1997. Paul Edwards revamped the hotel by building 35 new bedrooms on the site of the old rifle range. It began running all year round and at one point employed 25 people.^[3]

Closure and Takeover

In 2012, the hotels then owners closed down the hotel.^[5] It remained closed until it was acquired by its present owners, Henley Homes, in 2014. It relaunched in May 2017 following a multimillion-pound refurbishment, as Dunalastair Hotel Suites: a five-star, year-round hotel.^[6]

Hotel facilities

Dunalastair has 32 rooms catering for couples, groups, and families. There is also a bridal suite as well available at selected times during the year.

The hotel has previously proven popular for activity holidays due to its proximity to local walking trails and open waters, providing opportunities for fishing, hiking, watersports, and similar activities.^[1]
