She was one of the founders of the Society for Information Display and promoted better ways to display useful and important information. BiographyBairdain was born on June 6, 1922,[4] and raised in Atlanta, Georgia.[5] She attended Columbia University where she earned her bachelors degree in psychology and her masters in group development.[5] She earned her PhD in experimental psychology from Emory University in 1961.[5] She started working for ITT's Data and Information Systems Division in Paramus , New Jersey, that same year.[5] Her work at ITT involved working on human interactions with information displays in air traffic control.[5] In March of 1966, she became a staff scientist at Communication Systems, Inc (CSI) in Paramus.[6] Bairdain helped create the Society for Information Display.[6] She gave talks about how much information individuals were able to "absorb and use effectively" to make decisions.[7] She also proposed computer systems to make driving on freeways safer.[8] Between 1969 and 1971 she and her husband Ernest F. Bairdain researched PSYOP in Vietnam, producing an interim report, a main report, and twenty reports on narrower topics. Their study has been called "the standard reference cited by all later authors studying the effectiveness of PSYOP in Vietnam".[9] References1. ^{{cite magazine |page=52 |title=Deaths |work=Emory Magazine |date=Autumn 2015 |url=https://issuu.com/emoryuniversity/docs/autumn_2015_emory_magazine}} {{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Bairdain, Edith M }}2. ^1 {{cite web| url = https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/147648533/edith-bairdain| publisher = Find a Grave| title = Dr. Edith Munro Bairdain obituary| accessdate = 2019-03-02}}{{unreliable source|date=March 2019}} 3. ^{{cite journal| url = https://archive.org/details/196412InformationDisplay/page/n31| journal = Information Display| title = Editorial Advisory Board| year = 1964| volume = 1}} 4. ^{{cite book|title=American Psychological Association: Biographical Directory|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=xC1aAAAAYAAJ|year=1970|page=39}} 5. ^1 2 3 4 {{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/29083864/the_heraldnews/|title=Accident-Injured ITT Woman Scientist Envisions Computer System for Safety|last=|first=|date=1965-02-27|work=The Herald-News|access-date=2019-03-03|pages=10|via=Newspapers.com}} 6. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/29084397/the_heraldnews/|title=CSI Appoints Staff Scientist|last=|first=|date=1966-12-15|work=The Herald-News|access-date=2019-03-03|pages=96|via=Newspapers.com}} 7. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/29084725/the_heraldnews/|title=How Much Data Can a Decision Maker Take is ITT Talk for Display's Sake|last=|first=|date=1964-02-03|work=The Herald-News|access-date=2019-03-03|pages=14|via=Newspapers.com}} 8. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/29084852/arizona_daily_star/|title=Symposium Hears of Futuristic Freeway|last=|first=|date=1965-02-27|work=Arizona Daily Star|access-date=2019-03-03|pages=8|via=Newspapers.com}} 9. ^{{cite book |last1=Barger |first1=Michael G. |title=Psychological Operations Supporting Counterinsurgency: 4th Psyop Group In Vietnam |date=2014 |publisher=Pickle Partners |isbn=9781782896876 |url=https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=2pJvCwAAQBAJ&lpg=PT151&ots=nYUl5UfA6s&dq=bairdain%20vietnam&pg=PT18#v=onepage&q=bairdain%20&f=false |accessdate=3 March 2019}} 6 : 1922 births|2015 deaths|American women psychologists|Columbia University alumni|Emory University alumni|People from Atlanta |
