Born in Woolwich, Kent, Schenley married twice, first to Jane Maria Pole, daughter of Sir William Templer Pole, 7th Baronet and Charlotte Fraser. They had one child, Fanny Inglis Schenley (born {{circa|1834}}). After Jane died in 1837, he re-married in 1842 in an elopement to Mary Elizabeth Croghan, daughter of William Croghan and Mary O'Hara, and they had eleven children: Elizabeth Pole ({{Circa|1842}}–1915); William Croghan (died 1846); Lily (born 1843); Jane Inglis (1844–1925); Henrietta Agnes (born 1847); Clarence Edward Paget (born 1850); Alice (1853–1930); Richard E. M.
