He made his debut at the end of the 1903–04 Football League season, in a 2–0 loss away to Small Heath in the First Division,[2][6] and made five more league appearances the following season.[1] He signed for Brighton & Hove Albion in May 1905. He began as a regular, but was displaced by Tom Turner, made no more appearances in the Southern League team, and left the club at the end of the season.[2] He later played for Mansfield Wesleyans.[1] While a Notts County player, he received the Certificate of the Royal Humane Society in 1904 for rescuing a child from the Grantham Canal:[7]{{quote|text=Clare was walking on November 26th between Nottingham and Radcliffe-on-Trent, when he heard cries for help, and saw a boy named Harold Lamb, of West Bridgford, struggling in the canal. Although fully dressed, Clare unhesitatingly plunged into the water, swam to the other side, and rescued the boy.}} Clare died in 1944 in Edmonton, Middlesex, at the age of 60.[1][8] References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite book |last=Joyce |first=Michael |title=Football League Players' Records 1888 to 1939 |publisher=SoccerData |location=Nottingham |date=2004 |page=54 |isbn=978-1-899468-67-6}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Clare, Edwin}}{{England-footy-defender-1880s-stub}}2. ^1 2 3 {{cite book |first1=Tim |last1=Carder |first2=Roger |last2=Harris |title=Albion A–Z: A Who's Who of Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. |publisher=Goldstone Books |location=Hove |date=1997 |pages=52–53 |isbn=978-0-9521337-1-1}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.enfa.co.uk/playersearch.php |title=Player search |website=English National Football Archive |accessdate=18 September 2018}} 4. ^{{cite news |title=Other counties |newspaper=Lancashire Evening Post |date=27 March 1902 |page=5}} 5. ^{{cite web |url=https://cricketarchive.com/Nottinghamshire/Players/1077/1077914/statistics_lists.html |title=Lists of matches and detailed statistics for WE Clare |website=CricketArchive.com |accessdate=18 September 2018}} 6. ^{{cite news |title=Notts players |newspaper=Athletic News |location=Manchester |date=25 April 1904 |page=3}} 7. ^{{cite news |title=Gallantry rewarded |newspaper=Nottingham Evening Post |date=7 December 1904 |page=4}} 8. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?cite=QpsBjipjlzvCtgXHKABDIQ&scan=1 |title=Index entry |website=FreeBMD |publisher=Office for National Statistics |accessdate=18 September 2018}} 10 : 1883 births|1944 deaths|People from Basford, Nottinghamshire|English footballers|Association football fullbacks|Notts County F.C. players|Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. players|Mansfield Town F.C. players|English Football League players|Southern Football League players |
