He played college football at Georgia Southern University. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL) as an undrafted free agent in 2015, and then spent two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. High school careerJackson attended Westlake High School in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, where he was a letterman in football and wrestling. In football, he played the position of linebacker, kicker, and punter. Jackson was a 5A Georgia High School State Championship finalist in Wrestling at the 189 lb weight division. He won regional championships his junior and senior years.[1] College careerMaking the Georgia Southern Football Team as a tryout walk-on, Jackson saw action in 13 games as a freshman, and had 10 tackles. He played in 12 games as a sophomore in 2012, collecting 16 tackles and six special teams tackles. Earning the starting middle linebacker spot his junior season, Jackson totaled a team-best 92 tackles, 2.0 sacks and a fumble recovery in 11 games. A highlight game that year featured Jackson posting 10 tackles, including a team-leading eight solo stops in 26-20 upset win against the University of Florida. Jackson was named the College Sports Madness Southern Conference Player of the Week for his performance against the Florida Gators.{{cn|date=February 2018}} In Jackson's senior year, he was voted team captain by his teammates, and recorded a career-high 100 tackles, which ranked in the top- 10 of the Sun Belt Conference. He had four games with 13-plus tackles. Jackson also had a forced fumble and an interception, which helped seal a win at South Alabama. Jackson helped Georgia Southern win the Sun Belt Conference Championship in the school's inaugural year competing on the NCAA Football Championship Series (FCS) level in 2014. He was awarded First Team All-Sun Belt honors.[2][3] Jackson was nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, which nationally honors former walk-on players who have made significant contributions to their school's team. He was also nominated for the Wuerffel Trophy, which acknowledges players who show exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Also, Jackson was nominated for AllState Good Works Team for his volunteer work at a local Statesboro elementary school, and hosting a football clinic for children in Costa Rica during his Christmas break. Lastly, Jackson competed in the prestigious Medal of Honor Senior Bowl in Charleston, SC after completing his senior year.[2] Professional careerArizona CardinalsJackson was signed by the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2015.[4] Prior to signing with the team at his initial meeting with Cardinals coaching staff, he brought pound cakes homemade by his mother as an apology for missing his scheduled flight - this earned Jackson the nickname "Pound Cake" that stayed with him throughout his professional career.[5] He was released on August 31, 2015 after competing in the 2015 Cardinals' preseason games. Indianapolis ColtsOn December 8, 2015, Jackson was signed to the Colts' practice squad. He was released on December 16, 2015 and re-signed on December 22. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Colts on January 5, 2016. In 2016, Jackson played in all 16 games with 8 starts, recording 66 tackles. On September 2, 2017, Jackson was placed on injured reserve.[6] DeathOn February 4, 2018, the day of Super Bowl LII, Jackson was a passenger with 54-year-old Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe, when Jackson suddenly felt ill, and asked if the two could pull over.[7] Just before 4:00 A.M., the men exited the vehicle along the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 in Indianapolis. While on the shoulder, Jackson and Monroe were struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck, which veered into the emergency lane. Both Jackson and Monroe died at the scene. The driver, Manuel Orrego-Savala, 37, of Guatemala, was arrested after trying to flee the scene on foot, according to the Indiana State Police. Orrego-Savala was in the country illegally,[8] having already been deported on two occasions, in 2007 and 2009.[9][10] Authorities reported that Orrego-Savala was driving without a license and had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.239, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08 to drive in Indiana.[11] Initially identifying himself to police as Alex Cabrera-Gonsales, he had previously been convicted of drunk driving in California in 2005.[12] President Donald Trump tweeted about the incident. On February 7, 2018, Manuel Orrego-Savala was charged by the Marion County prosecutor with four felony counts: two counts of causing death while operating a vehicle above the legal alcohol limit, and two counts of failing to remain at the scene of an accident. The previous day, he was charged in federal court with illegal re-entry of a previously deported person.[13] References1. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://gseagles.com/roster.aspx?path=football&rp_id=9409|title=Edwin Jackson - 2014 Football|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150428114628/http://gseagles.com/roster.aspx?path=football&rp_id=940|archivedate=April 28, 2015|access-date=February 4, 2018}} 2. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://gseagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=940|title=Edwin Jackson - 2014 Football|access-date=October 20, 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://sunbeltsports.org/news/2014/12/10/fb_1210140835.aspx |title=UL Lafayette’s McGuire Headlines All-Sun Belt Conference Teams and Individual Award Winners |date=December 10, 2014 |publisher=Sun Belt Conference |work=www.sunbeltsports.org |access-date=December 14, 2016}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170731234444/http://www.azcardinals.com/news-and-events/article-2/Cardinals-Bring-In-14-Undrafted-Rookies/1b8a570e-0a35-41f5-92f9-a430dca19220|title=Cardinals Bring In 14 Undrafted Rookies|author=Urban|first=Darren|date=May 5, 2015|website=AZCardinals.com}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Meet Colts LB Edwin 'Pound Cake' Jackson|url=https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2016/08/18/meet-colts-lb-edwin-pound-cake-jackson/88949638/|author=Holder, Stephen|website=IndyStar|date=August 18, 2016}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Colts Announce Final 2017 Roster Cuts|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171109151022/http://www.colts.com/news/article-1/Colts-Announce-Final-2017-Roster-Cuts/5dc30820-9391-401e-8bdd-40852df5769e|author=Walker, Andrew|website=Colts.com|date=September 2, 2017}} 7. ^{{cite web | url = https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/edwin-jackson-colts-dead_us_5a782175e4b0905433b641e5 | title = Indianapolis Colts’ Edwin Jackson Killed By Suspected Drunk Driver | work = Huffington Post | date = February 4, 2018 | access-date = February 5, 2018}} 8. ^{{cite news|title=Man Held Over Death of NFL Player Edwin Jackson was in US Illegally|date=February 5, 2018 |url=https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/feb/05/edwin-jackson-car-crash-death-manuel-orrego-savala |publisher=The Guardian |accessdate=February 7, 2018}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2018/02/06/trump-uses-edwin-jacksons-death-to-call-for-tougher-stance-on-illegal-immigration/|title=Trump uses Edwin Jackson’s death to call for tougher stance on illegal immigration|first=Matt|last=Bonesteel|date=February 6, 2018|publisher=|access-date=February 6, 2018|via=www.WashingtonPost.com}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2018/02/04/edwin-jackson-indianapolis-colts-linebacker-killed-by-suspected-drunk-driver.amp.html|title=Edwin Jackson, Indianapolis Colts linebacker, killed by suspected drunk driver|first=Nicole|last=Darrah|date=February 4, 2018|website=FoxNews.com|access-date=February 6, 2018}} 11. ^{{cite web|title=Colts player Edwin Jackson, Avon man killed by suspected drunken driver on I-70|url=https://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2018/02/04/suspected-drunken-driver-kills-2-70/304726002/|website=IndyStar.com|date=February 4, 2018|access-date=}} 12. ^{{cite web |url= https://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2018/02/05/driver-accused-killing-colts-player-edwin-jackson-undocumented-immigrant-has-been-deported-twice/306779002/ |title= Suspect in Colts' Edwin Jackson, Uber driver deaths previously convicted for drunk driving in California |author= Justin L.
