HistoryThe museum takes its name from the shipping company Elder Dempster Lines, the original owners of the building in which the museum is now housed. Elder Dempster Lines was founded in 1878 by two Scottish shipping entrepreneurs, Alexander Elder (brother of the shipbuilder John Elder) and John Dempster, and the company used to transport bananas from Gran Canaria to Britain.[1] The Elder Museum took over the building and opened to the public in December 1999.[2] CollectionsThe museum display are on four floors, with exhibitions of technology, physics, mathematics, geology , biology, medicine and astronomy, with a digital planetarium.[2] Among the items on display are models of steamships and a marine diesel engine, a Northrop F-5 fighter jet plane, a greenhouse ecosystem and a "Robocoaster".[3] A steam locomotive dating from 1885 is displayed near the cafeteria. In 2017 the museum unveiled a scale model of the European Solar Telescope which is planned to be built on La Palma.[4] A new Science and Research room was also opened in 2017.[5] The museum encourages hands-on interaction with the displays, and notices around the galleries humorously state that it is forbidden not to touch the exhibits.[6] References1. ^{{cite web |title=Museo Elder, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria's Science Museum |url=https://www.spain-holiday.com/Las-Palmas-de-Gran-Canaria/articles/museo-elder-las-palmas-de-gran-canarias-science-museum |website=Spain-Holiday.com |accessdate=1 February 2019 |date=30 August 2013}} 2. ^1 {{cite web |title=Descripción |url=http://www.museoelder.org/index.php/descripcion |website=www.museoelder.org |publisher=Museo Elder |accessdate=1 February 2019 |language=es}} 3. ^{{cite web |title=Museo Elder |url=https://www.hellocanaryislands.com/museums-and-places-interest/gran-canaria/museo-elder/ |website=Hello Canary Islands |publisher=Turismo de Canarias |accessdate=1 February 2019 |language=en |date=29 November 2014}} 4. ^{{cite news |last1=Reina |first1=José L. |title=Así será el telescopio más grande del continente |url=https://www.canarias7.es/ciencia-tecnologia/astronomia/asi-sera-el-telescopio-mas-grande-del-continente-DA1983647 |accessdate=1 February 2019 |work=www.canarias7.es |date=29 August 2017 |language=es-ES}} 5. ^{{cite news |last1=Canaria |first1=Europa Press / Las Palmas de Gran |title=El Museo Elder abre la sala 'Ciencia e Investigación' |url=https://www.canarias7.es/ciencia-tecnologia/el-museo-elder-abre-la-sala-ciencia-e-investigacion-NE1547348 |accessdate=1 February 2019 |work=www.canarias7.es |date=13 July 2017 |language=es-ES}} 6. ^{{cite web |title=Datos de Museos de Gran Canaria: Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnología |url=http://www.grancanaria.com/turismo/en/culture/museums/datos-de-museos-de-gran-canaria/?id_museo=7 |website=grancanaria.com |publisher=Turismo de Gran Canaria/Cabildo Insular the Gran Canaria |language=en}} External links{{commonscat|Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnología|the Elder Museum}}
