Early life and educationAcevedo was born to Dominican immigrants and raised in New York.[1] She identifies as Afrolatina.[3][1] Acevedo holds a Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts from the George Washington University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Maryland.[4] CareerAcevedo is a previous National Slam Champion, as well as former head coach for the D.C. Youth Slam Team.[5] She taught 8th grade in Prince George's County, Maryland,[6] and was a 2010 Teach for America Corps member.[5] Her debut novel, The Poet X, was published by HarperCollins in 2018.[7] A New York Times Bestseller,[8] the novel also won the 2018 Boston Globe–Horn Book Award,[9] the Walter Dean Myers Awards for Outstanding Children’s Literature[10] in the Teen category, and the 2018 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.[11] It was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize.[12] The novel also won the Michael L. Printz Award for 2019.[13] Acevedo's Beastgirl and Other Myths was a finalist for YesYes Chapbook Prize, published in 2016.[5] Acevedo is both a CantoMundo fellow[14] and Cave Canem fellow.[14] Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming from Poetry, Puerto Del Sol, Callaloo, and The Notre Dame Review, among others.
